CONDUCTOR R. P. HEYER KILLED
May 11, 1906--R. P. Heyer, freight conductor on the Rio Grande Southern, was killed near Bear Creek Wednesday afternoon. Conductor Heyer and a brakeman had been riding on the front pilot of the engine, which was northbound for the purpose of flagging the work train which was somewhere along the track aheðVìŒ7&ad of them. When a curve was approached, the freight train would slack its speed and the flagman would run ahead. Heyer and the brakeman took turns doing this. At the time of the accident, the engine had been cut loose from the train and wasðVìŒ7& running ahead to pull some drift that lodged on a bridge; Heyer was alone on the pilot and it is supposed in stepping off slipped falling in front of the engine. He was dragged for some distance and only lived a few minutes after being pickedðVìŒ7& up. The remains were taken to RicoR. Mr. Heyer was injured by the turning over of the passenger train at Millwood two years ago. Deceased leaves a wife to morn his departure. (Note: per Dolores County Birth and Death Records, Book 1, attendiðVìŒ7&ng Physician was Howard H. Dawson);
