James Hoagland was the son of Peter Machett Hoagland and (Unknown) (Unknown). He was a ship carpenter on board a Untied States man-of-war, and going ashore in China with a skirmishing party, was killed. He was then 36 years of age. His name with the others killed at the same time is inscribed upon a monument which stands in the Navy Yard in Brooklyn, NY.
