     David M. Hughart was born on 3. Apr. 1835 at Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He married Emily Bull, daughter of Benjamin Hasbrouck Bull and Mary Ann Wicks, on 26. Oct. 1856 at Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana. David M. Hughart was draft enlisted as a Private into Company E of the 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry in Michigan City, LaPorte Co., Indiana. David's enlistment documentation lists him as being six feet tall, 29 years old, born in Greenbrier Co., Virginia, having gray eyes, brown hair, and a dark complexion. David's occupation is listed as farmer and his residence is listed as the Ninth District, Portage Township, Porter Co., Indiana. A pension file document for David M. Hughart indicates that he enlisted on September 28, 1864. During the Civil War, David M. Hughart served as a Private in Company E of the 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry for about eleven months in the South. David was discharged by Captain James H. Brown in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, on June 30, 1865, due to disability from heart disease, ill helath, and old age. Service file records for David M. Hughart spell his surname as Hugart and Hugard. November 22, 1864, muster of Company E, 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry, taken in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, provides descriptive data on David M. Hughart that is identical to data listed on his initial enlistment papers from Michigan City, LaPorte Co., Indiana. On 22. Nov. 1864. David M. Hughart appears on the Company E, 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry muster roll taken for March/April 1865. The roll spells David's surname as Hugart. David M. Hughart appears on the Company E, 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry returns roll taken on April 1, 1865. David is noted as 'Apl 1865. Gain, Apl 1/65 Goldsboro, NC. Drafted. As signed to the Co. Apl 1/65.' The roll spells David's surname as Hugart. David M. Hughart appears on the Company E, 33rd Regiment Indiana Infantry muster roll taken for May/June 1865. The roll spells David's surname as Hugart. David M. Hughart was mustered out out of service according to a muster-out roll dated June 30, 1865, in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. The muster-out roll indicates that David was never paid for service. Since enlistment, David had drawn $51.54 on his clothing account. Thr roll indicates that David was 'M.O. by virtue of War Dept. Obituary for David M. Hughart was published April 13, 1894, in The Tribune, Chesterton, Porter Co., Indiana: Through the kindness of Frank L. Longshore, The Tribune received notice of the death of a former well-known fellow townsman, David M. Hughart, at his home in the Hughart settlement. No particulars accompanied the announcement further than the information that the funeral would be held at the St. Clair school house Wednesday at 11 o'clock. Members of Chesterton Masonic Lodge were at once notified, as Mr. Hughart was a member of that body. Everywhere here the news was received with regret, as there were few men who were more highly respected and beloved than David M. Hughart. He was one of nature's noblemen, and once a friend always a friend. He was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia, April 3, 1835, and was one of eight children born to David and Nancy Hughart. His father came to Liberty township in 1835, and settled, just after David was born. He was married to Emily Bull in 1857, and this union was blessed with six children. He entered the Thirty-third Indiana Regiment during the war, and was stationed in the South eleven months. Some years ago he conducted a meat market in Porter, and continued in that business until he returned to the farm. He was a prominent mason, a faithful worker for the public good, and was one of the main stays of the Porter County Agricultural Society for years. His death will be generally mourned throughout Porter County.

Obituary for David M. Hughart was published April 13, 1894, in The Tribune, Chesterton, Porter Co., Indiana: COUNTY SEAT NEWS. David M. Huggart died at his residence in the north part of this city Monday night of stomach trouble aged 51 years. The funeral was held from St. Clair school house Wednesday. April 20, 1894, in The Tribune, Chesterton, Porter Co., Indiana: Real Estate Transfers. David Huggart to Portia Huggart 84 acres $2600. On 20. Apr. 1894.

FAILS SURVIVE Mrs. Melna Hanrahan, age 77 years, a pioneer resident of Liberty township, died Friday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Pillman, on Campbell Road, in Liberty township, six miles north of Valparaiso. She had been ill of pneumonia for the last two weeks. Mrs. Hanrahan was born in Liberty township, Porter county, on Dec. 13, 1858, a daughter of Arthur and Lydia Ophelia (Bull) Hughart, and had lived all her life in Liberty township. In 1877, she was united in marriage to William Hanrahan, who preceded her in death twenty-nine years ago. Surviving are three children, Arthur A. and Roy E. Hanrahan, and one daughter, Mrs. Edward Pillman all of Liberty township, and numerous grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Pillman home, conducted by Rev. Robert L. Ryerse, pastor of the Baptist church of this city. Burial will be in Kimball cemetery, in Liberty township. Friends may call at the home from seven o'clock this evening until time of the services. She was buried on 22. Dec. 1935 at Kimball Cemetery, Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana.
