Josiah Ashurst (M)

     Josiah Ashurst was born c 1768 at Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. He married Rebeckah Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy Jr. and Esther Stille, on 25. Jul. 1793 at Bedford County, Virginia. Josiah Ashurst died in 1820 at Clintonville, Bourbon County, Kentucky. Four children of Josiah Ashurst and Rebecckah (Kennedy) Ashurst married four Jones children of James Jones and Salathial (Schooler) Jones. Josiah and wife Rebecckah are probably buried on the Prichard farm owned by E. R. Davis, Jr in 1969. There is a stone not readable for Josiah Ashurst and a footstone for Rebecckah (Kennedy) Ashurst. This graveyard is some four miles south of Paris, KY., on the east side of the Paris-Clintonville Road, back near the railroad. The Prichard place was probably the Josiah Ashurst farm. He owned considerable land, much of it inherited from tne John Kennedy, Jr., estate. Some of the tax statements for periods after 1800 state that certain lands were entered in the name John Kennedy, Jr. An example is 1802: Josiah Ashurst, 132 acres Kennedy Creek, Bourbon Co., KY entered in anme of John Kennedy. 257 acres Eagle Creek, Scott Co., KY entered in name of John Kennedy. There is a good house on the Prichard farm believed to have a part of the original Josiah Ashurst residence. There is a mantle and paneling at the Duncan Tavern Library in Paris, KY, that was in the Josiah Ashurst home. It is large enough to cover one side of a room and some of it hand carved. Josiah must have been a very prominent farmer. It is noted that descendants in every generation since his day have a Josiah Ashurst such of Josiah Ashurst Jones.

That oratrix, Polly, Nancy, Polly, Paulina, and Rebecca and ortors Robt. John and Wm., together with Josiah ASHURST and Elizabeth are the only children of said Josiah ASHURST, deceased. Patsy md. Thos. JONES and Nancy md. Wm. JONES and oratrix, Polly md. Sanford GORHAM. In division Paulina shown to be sife of Preston GRIFFING. (Circuit Clerk Records, Suit in Chancery, Box 744, 9 Oct 1820).

Our subject was married in 1863 to Miss Nannie E. Penn, daughter of Joseph Penn, of Bourbon County. They are the parents of eight children, viz: Anna Bell, Lulu, Willie, Lottie Maude, Geo. M., Tice and Charles. Mr. Ashurst is the owner of 175 acres of finely improved land, which he farms in a general way, besides devoting some of his time to fine short horn cattle. Politically, he is a Democrat, never having voted and other ticket. He is an Elder in the Christian Church of which he is a member, and is a friend to all educational and religious enterprises.
