SIMEON JONES. It is a generally conceded fact that the farmer enjoys a greater amount of personal freedom than any other man who is engaged in the busy and almost endless task of accumulating money. There is something about life in the country where one is surrounded by Nature on every side, that seems to bring a quietness and peace found nowhere else.
Our subject, who is at present a prosperous farmer of Kerton Township, was born in South Bend, Ind., on the 11th of April, 1845. His father, Seabron Jones, was born in Ohio, but removed to Indiana when a young man, settling near South Bend. He was married there to Miss Fetna Curtis, and in 1849 removed to Illinois, making the trip by wagon and camping on the way. He settled at Bath, Mason County, where he remained one year, and then moved to this county, on section 17, Kerton Township, where he rented land and farmed. His father was a member of the Democratic party. He died in 1853. His wife died at the age of sixty-five. To them were born six children, viz: Nancy, Warren, Ada, Anna, Simeon, and Henry, only three of whom are living at the present time, viz: Anna, Warren, and Simeon.
Mr. Jones came to this place with his parents when he was only four years of age, and attended school in the little log schoolhouse in his neighborhood, but received a very limited educational training, the matter of education not receiving any of the care that is universally given it now in all parts of the country. At an early age he commenced working on a farm, and when only twelve years of age he worked for one man, and received in payment for his labor $9 per month at the start, and afterward received $30.
Our subject, in March, 1870, married Miss Josephine McCausland. Her parents were born in Canada, but her birth occurred in this State, and she received her education in this county. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been born five children, all of whom are living, viz: Adda L., Irvin O., Rosa, Scott and Kennett. After his marriage our subject rented a place for four years, and at the end of that time bought eighty acres of land, and lived on the same for a period of ten years. The place was little improved, and the only dwelling house was a small log cabin. He soon cleared thirty acres of the land, and built a nice house and large barn, and still owns the place, although he is now living on property which he has rented for five years, and which is a picturesque spot. The house stands on the edge of the bluffs that overhang the Illinois River, and commands a fine view of the beautiful landscape around. He is a member of the Democratic party, and is popular in political circles. He is held in the highest esteem throughout the township, and has been Road Commissioner for the past nine years.

Jul. 1883 at Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky, at age 91. He was buried at Paris Cemetery, Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky.

THOMAS JONES, retired farmer; P. O. Paris; one among the oldest citizens, now living in Bourbon County; is Uncle Thomas Jones, who has lived under every administration; from Washington down to the present; he was born Jan. 19, 1792, on Baughman's Creek, near Athens, in Fayette County, this State; his father was James Jones, who was born about the year 1758, in Spottsylvanina County, Va., son of Thomas Jones, a Virginian; James Jones was a Revolutionary soldier, also his brother, William, who was present at the surrender of Cornwallis; he emigrated to Kentucky, locating in Fayette County, in 1789; his wife was Sallie Schooler, also a native of the Old Dominion; she had three brothers, who served in the Continental army, viz : Horton, Benjamin and William; the father of our subject was a farmer, and raised a family of ten children--eleven being born ; the educational advantages afforded the family were very poor indeed; Thomas remained with his father until his majority, after which he hired to his father for a time, then volunteered as a soldier in the war of 1812, and was a member of Colonel Johnson's regiment of cavalry, and was at the battle of Thames, after which he was discharged and returned home; Jan. 22, 1814, he was married in North Middletown, to Patsey Ashurst, who was born in 1787, in that precinct ; she was a daughter of Josiah and Rebecea (Kennedy) Ashurst; he was a native of Georgia; Mr. Jones came to Bourbon County with his father in 1800; after the marriage of our subject, he located upon a piece of land, which he had leased near Thomas Station, in Clintonville Precinct; he had but little to commence with, his entire property amounting to about $300; he began with his naked hands in the woods to make his start, and from this small beginning, he after years of hard toil, accumulated about 1100 acres of choice land; being a man of iron constitution, of indomitable perseverance and a tireless worker, he made a success at last, and accumulated a handsome property; he gave his attention strictly to farming pursuits; in 1833, he began raising some thoroughbred cattle, of the short horn class, which he continued in a moderate way, until he abandoned farming and retired, and removed to Paris during the war, where he has since resided; his wife died, leaving him six children, viz: Josiah A., John L, Rebecca K., Sarah D., Thomas D., and Perlina A.--but three now living: Rebecca, now Mrs. Hildreth; Thomas D., and John I; Thomas resides in Tennessee; his present wife was Lucy A. Monday, a native of Madison County, a daughter of Edmond and Mollie Monday, both natives of Kentucky; he of Madison, she of Clark county; by last wife has one child, Lillie; he has been a member of the church over sixty years; in 1819, joined the Old Baptist Church; later he joined the Reformed, and now stands like a shock of corn, fully ripe and fit for his Master's use.

WILLIAM M. JONES.-"Sunny Valley," the fine homestead farm occupied by William M. Jones, is eligibly located about one and a half miles south of North Middletown, Bourbon county, aird is one of the most attractive rural demesnes of this favored section of the old Blue Grass state. Mr. Jones is known as one of the representative agriculturists and stockgrowers of his native county, where he is well entitled to the implicit confidence and esteem so uniformly reposed in him. He was born in.this county on the 25th of November, 1854, and is a son of Josiah A. and Leoma (Talbott) Jones, both of whom. were likewise natives of Bourbon county, where the respective families were founded in the pioneer days and where the names have been prominently and worthily identified with the civic and industrial development and progress. Josiah A. Jones was a son of William S. and Nancy (Ashurst) Jones and his wife was a daughter of Mason and Susan (Leach) Talbott. Josiah A. and Leoma (Talbott) Jones became the parents of four children, concerning whom the following brief record is entered--Susan is the widow of A. K. Young and resides in the city of Paris, this county; William M., of this sketch, was the next in order of birth; Mary L. died when about forty-five years of age; and Allen G. is a prosperous farmer of Bourbon county. The parents continued to maintain their home in this county until their death and the father was a representative farmer and influential citizen, ever coinmanding the esteem of all who knew him. He was a Democrat in politics and both he and his wife held membership in the Christian church.

William M. Jones gained his early experiences in connection with the practical affairs of life through his association with the work of the home farm, on which he was reared to adult age, in the meanwhile having duly availed himself of the advantages of the public schools of the locality. When about sixteen years of age he initiated his independent operations as a dealer in live stock and with this line of enterprise he has continued to be successfully concerned during the intervening years, which have also been marked by his close and successful association with agricultural interests. His advancement has been made by a very appreciable industry and good management and be is today one of the extensive farmers and stock-dealers of his native state. His beautiful homestead comprises eight hundred and fifty acres of valuable land, all in one body, and constitutes one of the "show places" of. Bourbon county. In addition to diversified agriculture he has made a specialty of the breeding of registered saddle horses and a number of the finest horses raised upon his estate have gained world-wide reputation, among the most prominent being Sterling Denmark, Montgomery Chief, Bourbon King, Marvel King and Brilliant King. In politics Mr. Jones is found arrayed as a stalwart and intelligent supporter of the cause of the Democratic party and while he is ever ready to give his influence and aid in support of all enterprises and measures, tending to advance the general welfare he has been animated by naught of ambition for public office. His wife holds membership in the Christian church and their beautiful home is recognized as a center of that gracious hospitality which lias given Kentucky so wide and enduring reputation.

On the 31st of May, 1882, Mr. Jones was United in marriage to Miss Fannie Evans, who was born in. Clark county, Kentucky, on the 27th of August, 1857, and who is a daughter of Thomas J. and Mary J. (Rice) Evans, both of whom were likewise natives of Kentucky, the former having been born in Clark county on the 2nd of October, 1832, and the latter in Bourbon county, on the 9th of February, x837. Their marriage was solemnized in Bourbon county on the 22nd of November, 1855, and they thereafter maintained their home in Clark county until 1873, when they removed to Bourbon county and established their home on the fine farm now owned by William M. Jones, the subject of this review, where they continued to reside until their death. Mrs. Evans was summoned to the life eternal on the 16th of Augu6t, 1904, and her husband passed away on the 7th of March, 1906. They became the parents of six children, namely: Fannie, Charlton T., Pattie D., Richard M., Effie S. and Jennie R.
