Death of an Old Resident
At 12:30 a.m. today Mrs. Mary A. Dubois died at her residence, No. 407 Oak Avenue, aged about 67
years. A year ago last November a son, Arthur C. Dubois, who was an engineer on the Illinois Central,
was killed and fearfully mangled on his engine which went through a bridge near Arlington [newspaper
account says Aplington]. The shock of this terrible accident quite overcame his mother and she never
entirely recovered but continued to sorrow for her boy until grief undermined her health and she has
finally passed away to join him where sorrow is unknown.
Mrs. DuBois' maiden name was Mary A. Kelly. She was born in Tompkins County, New York, and in 1854
moved west with her husband and family and located in Illinois. Here they lived about a year and, in
1855, came to this place where deceased has since lived. Coming here at that early date, the family were
among the pioneers of this section and were well known to all our people.
Some ten years ago her husband died, and two sons are also dead, leaving only one son, James Dubois,
who is an engineer on the Central, and a daughter, Mrs. Spencer, who lives at Miller [sic - should be
Millard], South Dakota.
Mrs. Dubois was a woman of kindly heart and many womanly qualities which endeared here to all who
knew her and her death is sincerely mourned by all our people while their heartfelt sympathy goes out in
fullest measure to the bereaved children.
The funeral will be held from the late residence of deceased on Oak Avenue tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:30
p.m. and will be conducted by Rev. C. H. Purmort, of the Presbyterian church. Mary Ann Kelley died on 28. Aug. 1891 at Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa, at age 66. She was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa.
