Subject: Clasje Longstreet/Langstraat
I was browsing thru your Conover website and saw some information regarding Dirck Langstraat's daughter that I believe to be in error. I have seen many group records in addition to yours that name Clasje's husband as Abraham Lott. I however, do not agree with those conclusions and thought I'd send you my reasons why. I believe that her husband was actually Abraham Lake.
I have researched my LAKE ancestors and their families for many years and have spent a lot of time trying to reconcile what is published in the many family books and early genealogical publications with what I find in land, probate, and other source records. I think many of these early authors and researchers did their best with what they had but unfortunately, many had flawed, mistranslated or inaccurate data.
1. The origin of the supposed marriage of Clasje Langstraat to Abraham Lott appears to have come from the Brooklyn DRC baptismal records of April 1696 that most have read as: "Jan, parents: Abraham Lott, Classje Langestraat, wit: Dirk Langestraat, Janna Havens". If you look at the original record, just above this entry is one for "Daniel, parents, Jan Leek (or Leck), Neeltje Claasen; wit, Claas Thomaffe, Francijntje Hendriks". The "ff" in the name Claas Thomaffe loops down into the next line, obscuring most of the last name of Abraham. A closer look at it, however, shows that it looks just like the same as the Leek or Leck for John on the line above. In the re-translation of these records by A P G Jos. van der Linde, commissioned in 1983 by the New Netherlands Project, he also records this entry as being for "Abraham Leek", not Lott. (The next entry is for Clasje's brother's child, Dirk, of which she is a witness. It appears that the two Lake brothers and Clasje's brother, Stoffel all had their children baptized on the same day.)
2. Abraham Lake was born c1676 per the partial Staten Island census taken in 1706 and found in Stillwell's "Hist and Gen Misc". In the census, Abraham is named and listed as being 30 years old. His sons, John, Richard and Daniel are also found in the list. "Clasje Lake", along with daughters Ann and Sarah are also found on this list.
3. Per the NYGBR 54:180: "Sept. 10, 1698: Antony Warshaer of Flatlands and Maritje his wife deed Stoffel Langstraat, Adrian Langstraat, Johannes Holsaer, Classje Lake and Cretje Williamse, late of Kings County, house, orchard, etc. in Flatlands bounded by property of John Vandyckhuys and Derick Amertman. The parties of the second part paying full value to Antony Holsaer, Benjamein Holsaer, Dirick Langstraat and Marytntje Langstraat when they are of age or marry the ninth part of said property. Signed by Antony alone. Wit by Henry Filkin and Ferdinand Vansycklyn, Jr. Ack. Sept. 15, Rec'd Sept. 16, 1698 before and by Henry Filkin, Reg." Since "Classje Lake" is included in this list of Langstraat siblings, it seems logical that she is the same person found in the baptismal record of her son, John two years prior.
4. John Lake, assumed to be the son of Abraham Lake found in the 1696 baptismal record, marries in c1721 to Catherine Benson, dau of Harmanus Benson and Aeltie Bickers. From the New Amsterdam DRC baptismal records, their children are named Clasje; Hermanus; Abraham; Johannes; Aaltje. The naming pattern of these children conforms to Dutch naming patterns of the day with John's oldest daughter being named for his mother, Clasje.
I have not been able to find any other records that support the premise of Clasje Langstraat being the wife of Abraham Lott. The best that I can determine, Abraham Lott was married to Geertje Dorlant.
Most LAKE books cite Abraham Lake as being the son of Daniel Lake and Alice Stillwell. Again, I don't agree and here's why:
1. Daniel Lake didn't marry Alice Stillwell Osborne until at least 1684, 8 years after the birth of Abraham. We know this because in the 1683 Gravesend rateables, Daniel is "taxed" as 1 adult person, not a head of household, having no property. "Ales Osburn" is taxed has having 115 acres. They obviously weren't married at the time of the rateables.
2. Abraham is not likely the son of Daniel Lake from a first marriage because Daniel Lake was probably born between 1661-63. This is based on Daniel being named as one of a group of pranksters named in a 1680 Court of Sessions record cited in John E. Stillwell's "Stillwell Genealogy, v. IV, pg 1 where Theopolis Phillips accuses "John Cason, Tho. Lake, Anthony Emans, Jon Griggs, Jr., Lubert Lubberttson, Jeremiah Stillwell and Daniel Lake for tying a cat to his mare's tail and turning her into the woods and which said mare he hath never heard of or seen since ... defendants were allowed one month to find the mare and if not found, to make her good and each fined 2s6d for breaking the Sabbath." In 1680, these were all young men between the ages of 16-20 based on what we know of them from apprenticeship and marriage dates. Daniel was probably 17-19 years of age at the time of the incident, and not likely to have been the father of Abraham, who was born in 1676.
3. I believe that Abraham is the youngest son of John Lake, Sr. and Ann Spicer. Abraham names his first son, John and his first daughter is named Ann. This again conforms with naming patterns of the day where children are named after grandparents. A record of Abraham Lake can be found in Gravesend as early as 2 Jan 1691/2 - (Town Records, Book 4, p. 43) where Abraham Lake and Abraham Emans are to be paid by the town for repair of fences. Then, on 29 Sep 1698, Abraham recorded his cattle mark on Staten Island. On Apr 1705, Abraham is named in an instrument recorded for the "Commissionr of Highways" as living in the County of Richmond. In 1706, he is found in the census, his age being "30 years" per Stillwell. The only LAKE candidates that would be old enough to be Abraham's father would be either John Lake, Sr. or John Lake, Jr. Since the birth date of John Jr. is not known, it is possible he could have married young (before his marriage to Neeltje Claessen) and had a child by 1676, but since Abraham is not named as a son in John Jr.'s will, it seems unlikely.
Anyway, just thought I would pass along these comments regarding my thoughts on the identity of Clasje Langstraat's husband being Abraham Lake, not Lott.
regards,
Annette F. Truesdell
