TIMELINE: Presidents Martin Van Buren through William Howard Taft. Anna Catharine Baird joined the Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Ohio when she was 12. She was a cousin to William Jennings Bryan 1860-1925, a Democratic political leader and orator. Bryan ran for President against William McKinley twice and lost. He was nominated three times as the Democratic candidate: 1896, 1900 and 1908. He later became Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. In 1925 he was prosecutor in a case involving teaching Darwin s Theory of Evolution in Dayton, Tennessee. The trial was known as the Scope Monkey Trial and was world famous as no one had ever dared teach anything other than the Bible. Bryan knew the Darwin Theory was against Bible teachings. Evolutionists -vs- The Bible. Bryan won the case, Clarence Darrow lost and therefore evolution could not be taught in schools. Five days after the trial, Bryan died in his sleep. He was given full military honors and interred in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C. The town of Dayton, Tennessee honored him by building a college which was named Bryan University. Later Darrow would pursue the matter to get the case overturned and it would become allowable to introduce the Darwin Theory into public schools. A movie was made of this trial starring Spencer Tracey and the controversy has never died with passionate beliefs on both sides.
