The Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter Co., Indiana: OPERATED UPON FOR APPENDICITIS Lafayette Marshall, a prominent young farmer residing north of town, just west of Wahob lake, was operated upon this morning at his home for appendicitis. The young man was taken sick a few days and his condition became so grave that it necessitated immediate action and a nurse and doctors were hurried to the home.

Obituary for Benjamin Lafayette Marshall was published December 23, 1913, in The Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter Co., Indiana: MORTUARY RECORD Lafayette Marshall, a prominent young farmer residing in the vicinity of the Phares school in Liberty township, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock, after an extended illness. Pneumonia developed and his weaked condition could not combat it. The deceased was born in Jackson township on Sept. 5, 1885. He was married several years ago to Miss Minerva Hanrahan, who survives him together with a little daughter. He also leaves a mother and brother, George in Philadelphia, two brothers, John and Sam, in Minnesota, one brother, Will, in the Philippines, and three sisters, one in South Bend, McCool and Michigan. The funeral will be held on Christmas day at 1 p. m. from the late home, conducted by Rev. T. J. Bassett, Interment at Kimball's cemetery. He died on 23. Dec. 1913 at at his home, Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana, at age 28; Benjamin Lafayette Marshall's death certificate filed in Valparaiso, Porter Co., Indiana, on December 31, 1913, indicates that he died on December 23, 1913, in Liberty Township, Porter Co., Indiana. Piecing together newspaper accounts of Benjamin Lafayette Marshall's illness and death, it is believed that he suffered an appendicitis which was not treated immediately. He was later operated on for the appendicitis at his home, but then caught pneumonia during his recovery and died. According to Benjamin Lafayette Marshall's tombstone in Kimball Cemetery, located in Liberty Township, Porter Co., Indiana, he died in 1913, presumably in Porter Co. He was buried on 25. The Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter Co., Indiana: FUNERAL MENTION The funeral of Lafayette Marshall was held Christmas afternoon at 1 o'clock from the late home, near Phares school, north of town. A large host of friends and relatives were in attendance, showing the esteem in which the young man was held by those who knew him. Rev. T. J. Bassett, of the M. E. church, of this city, conducted the services. His remarks were replete with words of comfort for the bereaved, and pleas for those of the community who have failed to heed His call. Music was furnished by Miss Joseph Mead, Miss Carrie Mead and Roscoe and Olcott Mead. The pallbearers were Charles Phares, Warren Dillingham, John Wheeler, Truman Lenburg, Myron Dillingham and Charles Anderson. Those in attendance from away were Samuel Marshall, a brother, of Minneapolis, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. William McCorkle, of McCool, the later a sister, and two sisters, Mrs. Neddo, of South Bend, and Mrs. Maxim, or Argos, Ind. The interment was at Kimball cemetery.

Obituary for Benjamin Lafayette Marshall was published January 1, 1914, in The Chesterton Tribune, Chesterton, Porter Co., Indiana [Volume 30, Number 41, Page 3, Woodville Section]: A large number of friends and neighbors attended the funeral of Lafayette Marshall at the family home on Christmas day at 1 o'clock. Mrs. Marshall and little daughter have the sympathy of the whole community in the sad death and loss of their husband and father. Mr. Marshall was a young man of exceptionally good character and worth and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
