William Barkuloo was born 16 Sep 1826 in Brooklyn, NY. His parents were Harmanus H. Barkuloo and Maria Suydam. He had four brothers and five sisters. He moved to South Carolina before 1847 and joined the Palmetto Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers during the Mexican War. He was severely wounded near Mexico City, Mexico in 1848 and given a medical discharge from military service
He was living in Columbia, SC about 1850 and married Eliza C. DeBruhl 16 June 1852. He had one son, William Fair deBruhl Barkuloo by Eliza, born 18 March 1853. Eliza died in childbirth.
William formed a regiment of Georgia militia in 1862 in Savannah and later became a Colonel of the Georgia 57th Regiment of the Confederate Army. He married Margaret Anderson of Brunswick, GA in 1863.
Colonel William Barkuloo was in the siege of Vicksburg and surrendered July 4, 1863. He was released July 7th and fought until the end of the war.

The following is a memo by Osmont V, Barkuloo (b.1892) that I found in his papers:
The 57th Regiment Ga. Inf. went into service into service as part of the 2nd Regiment Ga. State Troops Oct. 1861. (Term of service six months). At the expiration of enlistment entered the Confederate Service in the War and was sent to the Western Army under General Ledbetter below Chattanooga, Tenn. Whence it was sent to Knoxville, Tenn. Major Gen. Heath was in command Of Division. The Regiment was with General Smith in his entire march through Kentucky. After return was placed under Brigadier General Taylor and Major General Stevenson. Was sent Murfresboro, Tenn. From there to Vicksburg, Miss. Where it engaged in most of the battles before and during the siege. In the Battle of Baker=s Creek, Miss. May 16th 1863 the regiment lost nearly half its numbers in killed and wounded and imprisoned.
After the surrender and exchange the regiment was under Gen. Joseph E. Johnson until his removal when Gen. Hood was in command.
It was in the entire campaign in North Georgia and around Atlanta. Was sent in the rear of Sherman to Nashville, Tenn. Several men were lost in that Campaign. It was in the battle of Bentonville, N.C, surrendered under General Joseph E. Johnson at Greensboro, N.C. April 26th 1865. s. Andrew J. Miller

My father had this handwritten memo without a date or reference other than Andrew J. Miller.
He probably wrote it sometime in the 1950's-James M. Barkuloo (b.1929)
