Dorothy (Dottie) Newell Ricketts, 93, of Asheville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004.
She was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mary Lewis Newell. She was born in Bradford, Pa. She received education at the Bradford Elementary Schools, PA High School and Penn State University where she majored in art. Later she entered the nursing profession at the Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla. and worked in the medical and surgical fields to the time that she and her husband moved to Franklin. There they established the Franklin Mountain Mission for the people of Macon County, which was chartered under the state on North Carolina. She worked throughout the mountains of Southern Appalachia for 20 years. In 1979 she came to the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville because of husband's failing health and did volunteer work there. She had over 5,000 hours of volunteer time. She was affiliated with the Disables American Veterans Aux. Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57, World War 1 Barracks of the USA 505 Veterans of Foreign Wars Aux. 891 and American Legion Aux. Francey Burdette Post 70 American Association of Retired Persons. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Clayton Ricketts, and one son, David Dunnington.
Surviving are her children, John Dunnington of Jacksonville, Fla., Daniel Dunnington of Reidsville, Michael Dunnington of Greensboro, Judith Hadden of Otto and Mary Smith of Longmont, Colo; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
