ALEXANDRIA — Robert F. “Bob” Pierce, 82, died June 11, 2005, in Community Hospital Anderson, following an extended illness.
He was born April 21, 1923, in Alexandria, the son of William F. and Vida (Maddox) Pierce, and resided in Alexandria all of his lifetime.
Bob was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1941.
He was a veteran who served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippine Islands.
In 1987, he retired from Guide Lamp, formerly of Anderson, after 45 years of employment. Bob was a well-known farmer in Monroe Township, having farmed for more than 60 years.
He was a member of UAW Local 663 and Madison County Farm Bureau.
Bob started attending Alexandria First United Methodist Church with his mother when he was a boy. He practiced his faith in service to his church by teaching the Adult Sunday School Bible class, serving as a trustee, as chairman of the Board of Administration and head usher for several years. He also served on the Renovation Committee and was a past president of the Methodist Men and sang in the church choir. Bob was dedicated to his church and would do anything that was needed. He joined the Alexandria Masonic Lodge 235 in 1984 and has held every office in the lodge with exception of secretary-treasurer including serving as chaplain since 1999. He joined the Order of the Eastern Star 179 in 1985. He was a past worthy patron and was currently also serving as chaplain. He was a member of Chapter and Council 99. He will fondly be remembered as an organist and vocalist for numerous lodge functions. Bob had played semi-pro baseball and was known as an outstanding catcher for the Ted’s Cowboys team. He was an avid and loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed tractors and was “a fixer” of all things mechanical. Bob’s devotion to his family will always be fondly remembered.
Survivors include: His wife, Blanche “Tiny” Pierce, whom he married Aug. 31, 1946; two daughters, Leah (Dennis) Semon and Claudia Miller, all of Alexandria; three sons, Marc (Kathy) Pierce, Robert A. Pierce and Chris (Pam) Pierce, all of Alexandria; his brother, Ed (Bettie) Pierce of Alexandria; nine grandchildren, Angie (Troy) Cook, Holly (Brad) Webb, Kelly (Mat) Blanton, Tiffany Pierce, Michelle Hicks (and friend Scott Johnson), Stephanie (Adam) Fraley, Jeni (Charlie) Turner, Josh Killion and Tina Harvey; five great-grandchildren, Mariah Cook, Peighton Webb, Haley Johnson, Raegan Fraley and Elexis Turner; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Pierce, McClellan Pierce, Charles Pierce and Cloyd Pierce; sister, Nehersta Roberts; and a granddaughter, Megan Hicks.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Alexandria Fire Department Emergency Ambulance crews and the staff at Community Hospital Anderson who gave excellent care and service to Bob and the family.
A Service of Celebration and Worship will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church, 116 W. Broadway, Alexandria, officiated by Pastor Jerry Thomas. Interment will follow at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, with military honors being provided by Elwood VFW Post 5782.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, and/or one hour prior to the Thursday service at the church. Two memorial services will be conducted, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, by the Alexandria Masonic Lodge and the Alexandria Order of the Eastern Star.
