State Rep. Myra Crownover has filed for re-election to her fifth term in District 64.
Myra Crownover
Crownover, 60, R-Denton, has served as a state representative since replacing her husband, Ronny Crownover, who died before his term expired, in May 2000.
No Democrats and no other Republicans have filed to run against her.
During her four terms, Crownover said, she has made the quality of education in Texas her top priority.
“Texas can’t be a first-rate state without a first-rate education system,” she said. “It should be a top priority for the state of Texas.”
During her tenure, Texas has made steps to improve its education, she said.
One such step, Crownover said, is the state’s “4x4 program,” which requires high school students to take four years of math and science.
Along with education, Crownover touts her work to wisely spend taxpayers’ money.
“We understand that the money we are spending didn’t fall from the sky,” she said. “It came from Texans’ pockets and paychecks.”
As a North Texas representative, Crownover said, she understands energy concerns and transportation problems locally and statewide, and she said the Legislature is working to find solutions.
“We know we have to use the shotgun approach rather than the rifle approach to find a solution,” she said. “The next 20 years are going to be exciting. There are going to new approaches to the energy problems, and there is going to be a whole generation of answers.”
Crownover said the United States is just in its infancy on moving forward on alternative fuels.
District 64 includes portions of Denton County. Denton, Lake Dallas, Corinth, Shady Shores, Hickory Creek, Lakewood Village, Little Elm, Oak Point and The Colony north of State Highway 121.
Crownover earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in education from Texas A&M University. She married Ronny Crownover in 1970 and had four children. She also has one granddaughter.
State representatives are elected to two-year terms.
