He attended Cornell University, and received the first Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine conferred in America. He also spent time

In 1877, he delivered a course of lectures on veterinary science at the University of Georgia. There followed appointments from the state of New York for study of the diseases in swine, and from the U. S. Department of Agriculture for the study of animal diseases in the Southern states; These appointments were the starting points of his studies on Texas cattle fever, fowl cholera, and the nodular disease of sheep. Early in 1883 he was called to Washington to establish a veterinary division in tjhe Department of Agriculture; within a year, this division became the Bureau of Animal Industry, of which D. E. Salmon was chief until Dec. 1, 1905. At some time during his career, D. E. Salmon identfied the infectious pathogen Salmonella, cause of the human disease salmonellosis. In 1906, he was appointed to establish a Veterinary Department at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay; he organized the department and remained at its head for five years. D. E. Salmon returned to the U. S. in 1911; from then until his death in 1914 (his death oddly enough, was caused by pneumonia) he devoted himself to special veterinary work in the west.
