George Sortore was born on 4. Dec. 1835 at Amity, Allegany County, New York. He was the son of
William M. Sortore Sr. and
Cynthia Diana Clark. George Sortore married
Jane Maria Jadwin on 16. Feb. 1859. George Sortore began military service on 11. Aug. 1862 at Portageville, Wyoming County, New York; with Co. H, 130th Regiment, New York Infantry, this is the date on the
company muster-in roll of his enlistment, he joined his Company on 3
September 1862. The 130th Regiment later became the 19th New York
Calvary. He was described as was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and 5 foot 9 inches tall. George Sortore served as a Wagoner in Company H, 136th Regiment, 1st New York Dragoons during the Civil War. He enlisted at Alfred, New York on 11 August 1862 for a period of three years. He was mustered in at Portage Station, New York on 3 Sep 1862 and was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was detached as a Teamster to Post Quartermaster 3 Jan 1863. Detached to Ambulance Corps on 29 Jun 1863. January and February 1865, absent with Wagon Train, Winchester, Virginia. March and April 1865, absent with Wagon Train. He was mustered out at Cloud Mill, Virginia on 30 Jun 1865. Bounty paid $25.00; due $75.00 on 30 June 1865. He received a pension of $15.00 per month for his service in the Civil War. Bt 1862 - 1865. With Co. H, 1st Regiment, New York Dragoons, this Regiment was also
known as the 19th New York Calvary. He was injured during the battle
of Cedar Creek in Virginia. When his company was involved in a charge
the horse he was on stumbled and he fell off on 30. Jun. 1865 at Clouds Mills, Virginia. He ended military service on 30. Jun. 1865 at Clouds Mills, Virginia. He was Farmer. He died on 12. Nov. 1910 at age 74. He was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont, Allegany County, New York; 2, I-4.
