Derick Sutphen married Margaretta Cowenhoven, daughter of Cornelis Willemse Van Kouwenhoven and Margaretta Schenck, c 1731. Derick Sutphen married Mary Howell. Derick Sutphen left a will on 7. Jan. 1795

Derick bequeathed his farm to two of his sons, John and David, and to to Joseph, "the land on which he now lives."

He died on 27. Jun. 1796 at age 84. His estate was proved on 21. Jul. 1796.

First I’d like to thank you for making your work available for other researchers to look at!! I recently dove back into my Sutphen line and I’ve come across what I think may be an inaccuracy in the generally accepted line. I have had for many years one set of my 6xgreat-grandparents as Derick Sutphen and Margaretta Couwenhoven (bap. 5 Dec 1714, d. 11 Sep 1794), daughter of Cornelis Couwenhoven and Margaretta Schenck. I show they were married in 1731 and have the following list of children for them:

John – b. 1732, died young
Mary – b. 1747 – d. 1 Jul 1826 m. 1765 Jacob Van Arsdalen (you have her birth date as 1744)
Phoebe – b. 8 May 1853 – d. 5 Aug 1888 (unmarried)
John – b. 14 Jul 1756 – d. 27 Jul 1823 m. 22 Mar 1785 Lydia Baker
Sarah – b.? d.? m. ? Freeman
Naomi – b. 1756 – d. 11 Oct 1803 m. 1776 William Tone
David – b.? – d. 1831 m. Elizabeth ?
Joseph – b. Sep 1762 – d. 27 Jan 1824 m. 1782 Rhoda or Rhonda ?
Daniel – b.? – d. AFT 1795

I think this agrees with the most commonly accepted pedigree. I am descended through John and Lydia (Baker) Sutphen and originally was trying to find Lydia Baker’s parents, but I got sidetracked (grin) by the problem I’m writing you about. I am starting to believe that Margaretta was only the mother of the John Sutphen born in 1732 and that Mary Howell was a previously unknown 2nd wife and was the mother of the remainder of the children. I came across a record on ancestry.com in the US and International Marriage Records showing Derick Sutphen born 1712 marrying Mary Howell also born 1712, but no marriage date is given. I’ve always thought it was odd that there was a 15-year gap between John in born 1732 and Mary in 1747, but didn’t take the time to look into it further. Now that I’m looking at it, here is my line of thought:

The gap of 15 years between the first child John in 1732 and the second child Mary in 1747 is odd.
Derick Sutphen’s will (I have NOT seen a copy of this yet) is said to give his wife’s name as Mary
My John Sutphen who married Lydia Baker had a daughter named Mary Howell Burrows Sutphen (my 4xgreat-grandmother) who married Jacob Kirkpatrick. (Previously I had thought that the Howell and Burrows might be a connection to Lydia, but now I’m wondering if it doesn’t refer in part to John’s mother)
If Margaretta were born the same year she was baptized (1714), she would have been 48 years old when Joseph (b. 1762) was born. Not unheard of, but again, unusual for those days.
I have also read that the tombstone for Derick Sutphen’s wife in the Tennant Churchyard Cemetery reads Mary not Margaretta. Again, I have NOT seen a picture of this or any type of “official” document.

On your data, you have 2 Derick Sutphen’s listed with the same baptism date - 6 Apr 1712 … Derick Sutphen, son of Jacob Sutphen and Antje Bennet and Derick Sutphen, son of Derick Sutphen and Grietje Aertse Van Pelt. You show Derick Jacobse Sutphen as marrying Margaretta Couwenhoven and Derick Derickse Sutphen you show as marrying Jannetje Voorhees. I believe that your birth and marriage dates on Derick Derickse Sutphen may be incorrect. I believe he was born in 1722 in married in 1749.

I guess at this point my questions are:
1) Do you have any information that would refute the Mary Howell theory?
2) Do you know of anyone actively working on the same line?
3) Do you know of anyone who has access to the Freehold-Middletown Dutch Reformed Church records? (I think it may be the Marlboro Dutch Reformed Church now sometimes called the Old Brick Church. I got a little confused reading through some of the New Jersey sites and I’m stilling sorting that out in my head)
4) Do you know of anyone who has access to Derick Sutphen’s will or the will of any of the children?

One more thing I wanted to add was that I just came across the death notice for Mary Sutfin in the History of Old Tennenth Church by Symmes and the record reads:

Derrick Sutfin died June 27, 1796 in his 84th year
Mary Sutfin died Sep 11, 1794 in her 73rd year, wife of Derrick
Phebe Sutfin died Aug 5, 1777 in her 24th year, daughter of Derrick and Mary

I think this is another point for the Mary Howell theory since if Mary “Sutfin” died in 1794 at the age of 73, she would have been born in 1721 far later than Margaretta.
