They lived in Poland, Louisiana and were fortunate for his farming skills as the family did not suffer for food during the great depression. He helped his sister's and in-laws as much as possible during the depression and anytime they were in need. Before his retirement he reached the goal of acting postmaster of the Alexandria, Louisiana post office. He was buried at Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

James Benjamin Toney Sr. (M)

     It was the excitement and mystery of J.B. Toney, Sr.'s story of the family leaving South Carolina, shortly after buring his father in Aiken, South Carolina, and arriving in Rapides Parish, Louisiana with nothing but the homespun clothing they wore. At the time, my family's known history began with J. B. Toney, Sr. and Katherine Estelle Voorhies.

J.B. Toney died of pancreatic cancer at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. He knew he was sick, possibly had be diagnosed with cancer, and had gone to New Orleans to see what could be done as this was the foremost hospital in Louisiana at this time. He died three days after he was operated on and closed back up, with the declaration that nothing further could be done. The family did not have the money to bring his body back from New Orleans, Louisiana and resorted to borrowing money from a Kinsman by marriage, Oliver Peart.

James Benjamin Toney, Sr. and his wife Katherine Estelle Voorhies Toney are buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Ruby, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

Toney- At Touro Infirmary, New Orleans, Feb. 20, 1915 at 10;30 P.M., James Benjamin Toney died, aged fifty-eight years. J. B. Toney was an old and valuable citizen of Rapides parish.
Born in Barnwell county, South Carolina, Jan. 22, 1857, he came to this parish at fifteen years of age and settled in the Poland community where he has lived all these long years, a worthy and respected citizen.
His first wife was Mary Taylor, by whom he had two children, both dead and she dying in 1882, in 1884 he was married to Miss Katherine E. Voorhies, by whom he had nine children, five living.
He was a member of the Baptist Church, also a member of the Woodmen of the World.
The parish has lost a good man, the Poland community has lost a quiet, peaceable citizen, and his family a faithful husband and a loving, devoted father.
His form was laid to rest in the quiet Pine Grove cemetery, attended by his faithful comrades of the Woodmen and by a very large circle of neighbors and friends.

Meet the Tophams - a six-star service family with five brothers in the Armed Forces and sixth member at Boeing - Wichita.
The Tophams are well-scattered but once in a great while, some of them get together. Once of those rare occasions happpened last week when Sgt. James D. Topham visited his sister, Eula (Toppie) Topham (50) at Boeing after two years in the South Pacific. James left his job in Shop 4 nearly three years ago and entered the ground crew of the AAF. The other brothers are PVt. John D. Stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., Aprentice Seaman Robert L. in training at San Diego, Calif., Pfc Wayne B. in the service four years and seven months and now with the 137th Infantry in Germany, and Cpl Howard M., with the AAF at Tyndall Field, Panama City, Fla. The Tophams have about 30 cousins in service, too. "Toppie" is giving the boys her full support and proves it with a 44-month work record at Boeing. ""'It has been a little rough sometimes," she related, "especially when I broke my hip." But as soon as possible she was on the job again although she had to wear a plaster cast and walk with the aid of crutches for nearly five months. Too, she had 14 operations on her leg before coming to work here. "If my family can take it - I can, too," declares "Toppie". "It gives me a good, sort of patriotic feeling." She married Edwin F. Jennings on 9. Feb. 1956. Eula Ruth Topham died on 20. Aug. 1966 at Playa Del Ray, Los Angeles County, California, at age 51. She was buried on 23. Mrs. Eliza Heien Swisher, widow of Charles Edward Swisher, of West Middle St., died in the Mercy Hospital, Baltimore at 3:40 o'clock Sunday morning after undergoing an operation for cancer and effects of a stroke of paralysis. She underwent the operation on Thursday and never regained consciousness. She was aged 48 years 8 months and 1 day.
Mrs. Swisher was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Topper. Her husband died about 28 years ago. This is the fifth death in the family within one year.
She leaves a son, Edward Swisher of West Middle st., and two grandchildren. She also leaves eight sisters and one brother [sic]: Mrs, John Sprangler, Mrs. I.H.T. Rummel and Miss Rose Topper, of Gettysburg; Mrs. Harry Sneeringer and Charles Topper, of Hanover; Mrs. Robert Sprenkle, of East Berlin; Mrs. Vincent Orndorff, Bonneauville; Ms. Rebecca Martin of Danville and Mrs.[sic] George Topper of Baltimore.
Funeral on Wednesday motning at 9 o'clock from St, Francis Xavier Church, Rev W. F. Boyle officiating. Intement in the Catholic Cemetery.
