D. -- Among Paterson's most representative men of medicine is Dr. Sylvester Utter, who has by reason of his extensive study under the masters of dermatalogy throughoutEurope, become foremost in this particular line. Dr. Utter was born in Vernontownship, Sussex county, N. J., Dec. 1 4, 1859, the son of Henry S. and Julia(Card) Utter, both of several generations in New Jersey. Upon completing his prescribed studies in the local schools, he taught at Upper Haledom for three years. At the age of twenty-two years he entered New York University from whichhe recieved his medical degree in 1885. He served his internship under Professor Whitehouse at Cornell University, and has been associated with him ever since as dermatologist. For the past twenty-five years Dr. Utter has been dermatologist at St. Joseph's Hospital, and since its founding, of Barnert Hospital, serving with untiring effort. He is a member of Passaic County, State and American Medical societies, and ex-member of of the New Jersey State Legislature and present commissioner of finance of the borough of Hawthorne. Dr. Utter married (first) 1878, Marie E. Banta. She died in 1883. They had one child, Anna, now Mrs. Edward Bennett, of Warwick, N. Y. Dr. Utter married (second) Elizabeth Clark, daughter of J.W. and Johanne (Miller) Clark, of Paterson, becoming by this union the father of the following children: Elizabeth and Jessie. With a vigorous and luminous intellect, Dr. Utter combines strength a nd character with a genial dispostion. This union of traits explains in large measure his success and gives promise of even more, signal achievements in the future. He is a close student, keeping fully abreast of modern thought in all matters pertaining tohis profession, and public. His recreations are shooting and fishing, and he is a devotee of all outdoor sports. His residence is No. 750 Lafayette avenue,Hawthorne, NJ. From Unknown Newspaper, Mar 1922: VERNON VAGERIES -- Dr.Sylvester Utter, borough commissioner of finance of Hawthorne, N.J., and father of the late Mrs. Edward Bennett, of New Milford, died at his home on Goffle Hill Road, Hawthorne, last Wednesday. Dr. Utter was one of Hawthorne's most prominent citizens for many years Mayor of the borough, for several terms as healthofficer. He born in Vernon township, and began the practice of his profession in Stockholm.
