John Whitten Van Cleve was born on 27. Jun. 1801; according to the Dayton Journal Jun 3 1923 he was "the first male child born in Dayton, OH. He was the son of Benjamin Van Cleve and Mary Whitten. In 1819 John Whitten Van Cleve graduated from Ohio University. John Whitten Van Cleve was born in 1858 at Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; in the layout of Woodland Cemetery in Dayton (and also in Lebanon) set aside beautiful plots on to of the hill overlooking Dayton and made provision for the Van Cleve, Andrews, Dover and related families. Adjacent to his own plot is that of the three Dover branches, three Andrews brances and otheres. The Wright Brothers and sister along with their parents are on a neighboring hillside. He died in 1858. According to the Dayton Journal Jun 6 1923 he was a scholarly man versed in music, painting, engineering, botany, geology and history, He spoke Latin, Greek, French, and German as fluently as he did English. He also studied and practiced law, was mayor, part owner and eidtor of the Dayton Journal. We was partly responisble for laying out the Woodland Cemetery and was on the Commission that built the Dayton Courthouse. In the layout of Woodland Cemetery in Dayton (and also in Lebanon) set aside beautiful plots on to of the hill overlooking Dayton and made provision for the Van Cleve, Andrews, Dover and related families. Adjacent to his own plot is that of the three Dover branches, three Andrews brances and otheres. The Wright Brothers and sister along with their parents are on a neighboring hillside.

Wilson Frost Van Cleave and Nancy Jones Lawrence. Volney Newton Van Cleve married Estha C. Yandle, daughter of Philander Yandle and Frances Rushing, on 11. Sep. 1855 at Johnson County, Illinois. Volney Newton Van Cleve began military service on 18. Feb. 1862; Company H, 60th Regiment, Illionis Volunteers. He promoted to Sergeant on 24. Feb. 1862. He died on 22. Mar. 1862 at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois, at age 27; of typhoid fever.

He was a tavern keeper at the junction of Waren and Jefferson Streets, Dayton, Ohio a 1812. He married Sarah Miley c 1816; no issue. William Van Cleve married Elizabeth Wright on 8. Mar. 1821 at Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio. William Van Cleve died on 7. May. 1828 at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, at age 46.
