Of his life he states: "I was formerly in the ice business and through a defaulting secretary lost a very large amount of money. Having about five cents left, some of my friends helped me and I went to Alaska, but health would not permit me to remain there. So I returned and fitted out a rig, and went camping over the State of California for one year. I have mined in Arizona, Mexico, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. I took out in one pan of gold dust gold to the amount of $634.40."
