William A. Bowen was born on 9. Jan. 1835 at Egg Harbor Twp., Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was the son of
Jesse Bowen and
Lavinia Adams. William A. Bowen married
Asenath Collins, daughter of
Daniel Lake Collins and
Mary Ann Ingersoll, on 10. Sep. 1859.
William and his family lived in a house on the west side of Shore Road (Main Street) in Pleasantville between Adams and Woodland Avenues. The property had been given to William's first wife, Ascenath, by her parents Daniel and Mary Ann (Ingersoll) Collins, and was part of the property Mary Ann Collins had inherited from her father, Isaac Ingersoll. Because Ascenath owned the property during their marriage, William acquired a life estate in the property under the legal doctrine of curtsy, and William continued living in the house with his second wife and family. After William's death, his childfen from his first marriage - who had inherited the house from their mother Ascenath - sold the house.
William A. Bowen married
Huldah C. Martin; six children. William A. Bowen died on 9. Nov. 1903 at Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, at age 68.
