Velma Brinkerhoff was born on 24. Jul. 1906 at Glendale, Kane County, Utah. She was the daughter of
James William Brinkerhoff and
Mary Anderson. Velma Brinkerhoff married
Henry Carroll, son of
Frederick Giles Carroll and
Clara Isabell Esplin, on 6. May. 1929 at Orderville, Kane County, Utah. Velma Brinkerhoff died on 26. Jul. 2004 at Cedar City, Iron County, Utah, at age 98.
CEDAR CITY/ORDERVILLE -- Velma Brinkerhoff Carroll, age 98, quietly completed her mission on earth Monday, July 26, 2004 in Cedar City, Utah at the home of her daughter. She was born July 24, 1906 in Glendale, Utah the first of eight children to James William and Mary Anderson Brinkerhoff. She attended school at Glendale and Orderville, and graduated from High School at the BYU Academy in Provo, Utah. She completed an LDS Mission to the Central States in 1926-1928. She married Henry Carroll on May 9, 1929 in Orderville, and had the marriage solemnized three weeks later on May 27, 1929 in the Mesa Temple.
Velma was the mother of five children. She had many varied interests, but her husband Henry, their family, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were always the central focus of her life. She was always active in the church and served in many callings, including teaching, leading and playing music, and ward and stake leadership positions in Glendale, Orderville, and the Kanab Utah Stake. She loved knowledge, education, poetry and political activities. She was best known for her crochet work, meals, and thousands of jars of canned food she put up for her family and the sheep camps, or "The Herd" as we called it. Velma lived a long and eventful life and was a good influence on many people. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include son Norman (Barbara) Carroll of Orderville; daughters Mary Lou Melling of Cedar City, Janet Gordon of Cedar City, and Madolyn (Dick) Bills of Salina, Utah; sister Laurel (Mason) Cottam of Mesa; twelve grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, son Kent F. Carroll, son-in-law Robert Melling, and brothers and sisters Leon Brinkerhoff, Bill Brinkerhoff, Lue Brinkerhoff, Marvin Brinkerhoff, LaPriel Brinkerhoff, and Adell Brinkerhoff.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 30, 2004 at 2:00 PM in the Orderville LDS Chapel. Friends may call from 12:30-1:45 PM at the Chapel. Burial will be in the Orderville Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Iron County Home Health Agency and the Senior Citizen's Program who were so kind and special to Velma and provided such great care while she was here. They would also like to thank the Cedar City 5th and Orderville 1st Wards for their kind service.
