     Bernice Toney Brittain delivered Maxine at home and had a very long and difficult labor. So difficult and unpredictable was the birth that a medical doctor was called. Maxine was delivered just shortly before the doctor got there. On his arrival, he was shown the baby. He took one look and shook his head, declaring the baby dead. She was laid, wrapped in a blanket on a table.
Katie Estelle Voorhies Toney, her grandmother, was relieved to have the doctor looking after her daughter, Bernice, and decided to clean the newborn for the burial. As soon as Katie picked up the lifeless blanket, a gasp was heard and then a cry. The baby was alive, but no one knew for how long she had been cut off from oxygen. Evidently it was long enough to cause some sort of brain damage. Maxine was said to have been brilliant when it came to playing a piano; however, she was very anti-social and could not carry on a successful relationship with people.
She had one male child out of wedlock and gave him away for adoption. Later she married, but the marriage didn't last long; but long enough to give her another son. Before the child was very old,Maxine's father, with whom she had been living, kicked her out of the house and told her he never wanted her to come back.
Believing she had no one to turn to, she put her second son up for adoption and went to live on the streets of New Orleans. No one in the family heard from her again. It was thought that she was dead, until that she had actually died about the end of the Viet Nam War, still living on the streets of New Orleans Louisiana. In her pocketbook, she was still carrying the birth certificate of her youngest son. l have heard that her death brought the knowledge that she had two sons and that they were able to find each other and meet. Maxine Brittain was the daughter of William Brittain and Bernice Toney.
