Lewis Fayette Buckles was born in 1899. He was the son of
Lewis Warren Buckles and
Minnie Bell Sharp. Lewis Fayette Buckles married
Olive Davis on 23. Oct. 1938 at Denver, Denver County, Colorado. Lewis Fayette Buckles died in 1947 at Denver, Denver County, Colorado. By Norma Ellen Buckles Gamble

Lewis Warren Buckles was born on August 31, 1859 in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois. He married Minnie Belle Sharp on August 5 1883, in Peru, Kansas. He died July 5, 1925 in Winfield, Kansas and was buried July 9, 1925 in Sedan, Kansas. His father was Henry Harrison Buckles and his mother was Emily Sams.
Minnie Belle Sharp was born March 31, 1865 in Marion, Indiana. Her father was Joseph Sharp and her mother was Harriet Weasner. She married Lewis Warren Buckles on August 5, 1883. Of this union were born Henry Edward Buckles and Lewis Fayette Buckles. I didn't know my grandfather at all as I was only about 4 years old when he died. I do remember my grandmother who must have been 75 years old before I first saw her. She lived in California and as traveling was hard and expensive, we didn't get to see her very much. I do know she divorced Grandpa and raised her two boys by herself. She was a dressmaker, and I believe she also worked in rich people's homes. I don't know whether she was a maid or what. She came to visit Rachel for a while then came to visit Bob and I for a while. She didn't like Wyoming, however, and soon went back to Los Angeles, where she died on February 2, 1947. She is buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.
Of her two boys I can write very little about her youngest son. However, I will write what I can remember. Lewis Fayette Buckles was born in 1899 and died in 1947 in Denver, Colorado. We always called him Uncle Fay. He was living in Denver when I first saw him. He married Olive Davis who preceded him in death. They had only one child, Marguerite, who was a little petite blond, full of fun and always glad to see us. Her husband was Robert Hanrahan who was a Denver Fire Dept. Captain. He and Marguerite were married in Denver on October, 23, 1938. They had two sons, Robert Jr. and James Lee, both are still living in Denver, as far as I know. He died in 1968 but I have no record of Marguerite's death although she preceded him in death. ( Marguerite Mable Buckles died December 26, 1963, in Denver, Colorado.) Neither was very old when they died, he was 54, so she was younger than that when she died (45). They made frequent visits to Wyoming especially to Pinedale where they stayed with Rachel and Carl.
Sarah Ellen McConaghy Buckles was my mother. She was born January 4, 1988 in Robinson, Colorado. Her parents were John H. McConaghy and Rachel Eldora Glezen McConaghy. Her parents had ten children but only six of them
lived.
One of her brothers was John McConaghy born in Leadville, Colorado and was married to Elizabeth Weatherby. Uncle John worked for Johns Manville and was very successful. He had two children namely Kathleen and Jack .
Another brother was David Lee McConaghy who married Jean Monroe whom he later divorced. Uncle Dave was a bus driver, truck driver and a jack of all trades. Possibly he may have been the "black sheep"? But he was a lovable wonderful "sheep". He had several children--Jean, Maudie and I don't know for sure how many more. He died in Henderson, Nevada. He lived in Nevada for many years. He married again in later years and I think he had a daughter named Eldora. (He had three daughters by this marriage. Maxine, and Cecila were the other 2 daughters. His second wife was Maxine.)
Mom's oldest sister was Maude who was born in 1878. She married Robert Kinne who was an engineer for the city of Elko, Nevada when I first knew him. They lived in Elko, Nevada for many years and had one son Alfred who became an engineer with the State Highway Department in Nevada. Aunt Maude was a very lovable person who did a great deal of community work. Alfred and his wife Ruth had two boys one of whom was a School Principal in Carlin, Nevada. Both Ruth and Alfred are now deceased.
Grandma McConaghy made her home with Aunt Maude and Uncle Bob for many years. I can remember Grandma McConaghy as being very tall--at least 6 feet and big. She always wore long dresses that went almost to her ankles. They were perfectly straight dresses with no belt. She was a very stately looking lady and she had the look of fine breeding. In fact I can remember my Mom as saying when she was a girl they lived in a very fine house in Colorado Springs, Colorado and were well-to-do, with a cook or housekeeper and everything they wanted. Grandpa McConaghy was a manager and owner of an investment company in Colorado Springs and traveled extensively as a mining engineer. Grandma McConaghy was born April 23, 1861 in Fort Dodge, Iowa and died August 18, 1946 in Elko, Nevada. I don't remember Grandpa McConaghy as he died in 1929 in Palisade, (Bouillon) Nevada. He was born in Northern Ireland, May 2, 1857.
Mom's second oldest sister Fannie Platt McConaghy was born in Breckenridge, Colorado in 1880. We always knew her as Aunt Fan. She married Howard Kingsley and they had four or five children. Glezen, Howard, David, Francis. They all lived in California and I didn't know any of them except Frances and David. Aunt Fan divorced Howard. Then later she married Bob Kinne after Aunt Maude died. When Uncle Bob died she moved from Elko back to California where she died November 3, 1967.
Aunt Onie was another of Mom's sisters and she was born in Leadville, Colorado. She married Maurice Lewis. Uncle Morey as we called him. They lived in Reno, Nevada in their later years. Uncle Morey worked as a maintenance worker at the University of Nevada. He also had a gold mine in Nevada in which he prospected in his spare time. As far as I know he reaped very little benefits from it. He and Aunt Onie had 5 children namely, Bill, Eldora, Patricia, Bob, and Dick. Bob was deaf and attended the deaf school in Odgen, Utah and also Gallaudet College for the deaf in Washington DC. He married a deaf girl and they had two boys, neither of whom was deaf. His wife's name was Jewel. ( Bob and Jewel were deaf due to illness) He worked in printing presses as the noise in such places didn't bother him. He and Pat both died when they were fairly young, Probably in their 50's. Aunt Onie and Uncle Morey both died in Reno, Nevada. She died in 1976 and I have no record of his death. Their daughter Eldora did not marry and was an executive secretary for the Catholic Bishop of Nevada. Pat was a nurse and married Dick Landis, Who is also deceased. Bill was the postmaster in Reno. He married Blanche who was a Home Ec. teacher in Reno. When he retired he moved to California. He has one daughter who is a free lance writer but I don't know how many children he has. Dick married Virginia and still lives in Reno. I am better acquainted with Aunt Onie's family as I spent one summer in Reno with them.
Mom (Sadie) married my dad on September 6, 1906 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Their first child Rachel Eldora died in infancy. Their second daughter was Ione Belle (the Belle from Grandma Buckles) she was born in Colorado Springs on August 3, 1908. After she was born Mom and Dad traveled with a team and horses as Mom's health wasn't very good and the doctors decided she needed to go somewhere where she could get lots of fresh air. I don't know how far or where they traveled but one of the places they located was Flagstaff, Arizona, where their third daughter Rachel McConaghy was born on August 12, 1911. Rachel was born in Arizona before it became a state so we used to tease her about not being a citizen of the United States. Arizona became a state in 1912. I think Dad prospected there and also played professional baseball.
After leaving Arizona, Mom and Dad went to Salt Lake City, Utah where Harry Edward was born on September 17, 1916. (They lived in a company house in the company town of Arthur, which no longer exists, it was west of Salt Lake City.) By that time Dad was no longer playing baseball professionally as he gave that up in 1915. They left Salt Lake City in 1919 and went to Rock Springs, Wyoming as I've stated before in his history. I, Norma Ellen, was born in Green River, Wyoming on February 7, 1921 and when I was a few months old, Mom and Dad moved to Reliance where they resided until Dad's death. Mom resided there off and on for several years after that.
Sadie, my mom, was born in Robinson, Colorado on January 4, 1888. She attended school in Colorado Springs. She was a member and Past Matron of the Eastern Star Mountain Lily Chapter #10 in Rock Springs. She was a member of the Reliance Community Council. The Council worked with the Union Pacific Coal Co. to provide community actives for the Reliance Coal Camp. She was also a Girl Scout Leader. She was an active member of the Democratic Rallies in Reliance. She also helped many foreign people in Reliance study to become United States citizens and would go with them to Green River when they received their citizenship papers. She was fantastic in understanding their broken English.
After my father's death she lived alone in Reliance for a while and then stayed at Ione's, Rachel's, and my homes for a certain time each year. She lived in Pinedale for a while on the Jorgensen ranch, with a nurse companion. When she could no longer be taken care of at home she entered Kimberly Manor in Rock Springs where she helped many people there with her positive attitude. She remained there until her death. May 15, 1969.
Following is the history of Sadie and Ed's family as I remember it.
Ione was the oldest living daughter. She attended schools in Rock Springs, Green River and Reliance. She married Rene Leo Jacobs on May 5, 1927 in Manila, Utah. They homesteaded and lived in a log cabin near Laramie, Wyoming where sons Richard Leo, and Donald Rene and daughter Ione Jean were born. They later moved to Boulder, Wyoming where Jake worked for various ranchers. They moved to Pinedale, Wyoming where Jake became a meat cutter and Ione became a reporter for the Pinedale Roundup paper. In 1948 the family moved to Colorado, first to Craig and then to Kremmling where Ione worked as secretary for the extension service for 30 years. Jake was a meat cutter in Kremmling. Ione and Jake's daughter Ione Jean and her husband were killed in an auto accident on November 11, 1966 somewhere near Denver, Colorado. They left 5 children orphans, 2 by a previous marriage of Jean's and 3 by her second marriage. Ione raised all five grandchildren, namely Cindy, now living in Fruitland, Utah and Vern of the first marriage. Robert, Alan, and Mike of the second marriage. Dick (Richard Leo) Ione's oldest boy was born in Laramie, Wyoming on February 12, 1928. He died on April 25, 1988 in Kremmling, Colorado, of a ruptured colon. Dick is buried in Kremmling, Colorado. Don was born November 26, 1930 in Laramie, Wyoming and died on May 15, 1988 in Denver, Colorado, of cirrhosis of the liver. Don is buried in Kremmling, Colorado. I have no date on Jean's birth. ( Ione Jean April 28, 1932). Ione died December 1985, in Kremmling, Colorado, and Jake died in 1968 also in Kremmling. The only surviving members of her family are the five grandchildren she raised. She also has some great grandchildren.
Rachel McConaghy Buckles, the second living daughter was born on August 12, 1911 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Rachel attended school apparently in Rock Springs and Green River, Wyoming. When the family moved to Reliance in 1921 she attended grade school in Reliance and then rode a bus to Rock Springs to High School. Reliance had no high school at that time. She graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1929. She married Carl Jorgensen in Green River on July 2, 1930. They lived on a ranch in Boulder, Wyoming for 10 years and then they moved to Pinedale in 1941 on what they called the "Off" place which was part of the Nels Jorgensen place. They lived there the rest of their lives engaged in cattle ranching. Their children, Bud and Margie attended school for a while in Cora, Wyoming. They rode to school in the winter in a sleigh that had a car body and was pulled by a team of horses. They later moved into Pinedale in the winter months where the kids attended Pinedale schools. Carl Ray (Bud) was born May 14, 1931, Margie Lareen was born January 2, 1934 and Nancy Lee was born May 19, 1941 and I think they were all born in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
I can remember spending many of my summers on the ranch in Boulder with Rachel and Carl. I worked in the hay field and one year Carl, Vivan Slagowski, and I put up all the hay on the Boulder place. Carl and Vivan would mow in the mornings and I would rake. In the afternoon they ran the stacking outfits and I raked. I got a $1.00 a day wages and Vivan got $2.00. With that money I bought my Piano. I can remember Mr. and Mrs. Nels Jorgensen, as Mr. Jorgensen would take Warren and I for rides to Big Piney and other places in his car. I stayed with Mrs. Jorgensen at the home place for a while one summer, she and I took care of Carrie Murdock's kids while she was in the hospital having another child. Mrs. Jorgensen taught me how to cook and also bake bread. They were wonderful people.
Carl was very active in Wyoming Stock Growers of which he was President. He was President of the Wyoming Fish and Game Commission and was inducted into the Northern International Stock Show Hall of Fame. Rachel was a Past Matron of the Eastern Stars, was a Job's Daughter Guardian, was a charter member of the American National Cowbelles and was very active in the Wyoming Cowbelles.
Rachel and Carl's oldest child "Bud" married Mary Caroline Brookshire in Rawlins, Wyoming on July 9, 1960. They have 5 children namely Julie, Nels, Carl, Carol, (Twins) and Scott. Bud and Mary Caroline reside on the original "Off" place near Cora, Wyoming.
Margie, Rachel and Carl's daughter married James Thomas on June 20, 1954 in Pinedale. They have 4 children namely, Joslyn Rae, Kevin James, Brett Lee, and Lisa Renee. Margie and Jim reside on the "Cottonwood Place" near Daniel, Wyoming. Margie's dad Carl sold this ranch to Jim and Margie.
Nancy, Rachel and Carl's youngest married Max Carter on May 27, 1960 in Salt Lake City, Utah, they had two boys. Danny, who died in infancy and Shayne who resides in Salt Lake City, (Draper) Utah. Shayne became the World Champion Horseshoer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in July, 1984. Nancy and Max reside in Salt Lake City, (Riverton), Utah.
Rachel died very suddenly of a heart attack at the home of her Neice Karen Lewis in Green River, Wyoming on January 5, 1982. Carl died on February 21, 1988 in Pinedale, Wyoming.
Harry Edward Buckles, Sadie and Ed's third living child was born September 17, 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended Reliance schools where he made his home. He married Bobby Rogers and lived in Las Vegas where Bobby died in about 1940, I believe. He was inducted into the armed services on March 31, 1942. He was in the European Theatre of War where he was in on the second invasion of Normandy Beach. He was in General Patton's Third Army, in the 90th infantry division about which there is a complete history book written. He was in the historic Battle of the Bulge. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1948 but re-enlisted in 1948. He decided that he would make the army his career. However, he was sent to Korea where he fought in the Korean War. He returned from Korea and decided that if he was lucky enough to make it back from two wars, he'd go into something safer the rest of his life, so he was again Honorably Discharged in August 1952. He was a truck driver most of his life. His second wife was Grace Williams and they later divorced. He then married Penny King with whom he lived the rest of his life. He and Penny lived in Reliance for a short time with Mom and he worked for Warren, his brother, in the dry wall business. He moved to Cheyenne when Warren did, and they sheet rocked many houses. When that business fell through, he went to Louisiana where he became a true Southerner even to developing the Southern accent. He didn't have any children. He died very suddenly of a heart attack August 15, 1986 at the age of 69 in Leesville, Louisiana, and was buried August 19, 1986 at the National Cemetery in Pineville, Louisiana.
I, Norma, am the third living daughter. I was born in Green River, Wyoming on February 7, 1921. I attended grade school and high school in Reliance where I graduated in 1938. I attended the University of Wyoming where I received my normal diploma in 1940. I taught in Burntfork, Wyoming for 3 years and then in McKinnon, Wyoming for 36 years. I received my B.A. Degree in 1965. I married Bob Gamble in 1942 and have lived on a cattle ranch in Burntfork, Wyoming since 1942. We have one daughter, Karen Marie born May 5, 1943 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Karen married Donald Lewis in Green River, Wyoming on June 30, 1962. They have three boys, Donald Kim, born in Ogden, Utah,on January 5, 1964. Robert Troy born in Ogden, Utah on November 16, 1966, and Conn Lee born April 2, 1972 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Robbie married Dolores Apostolope in Green River, Wyoming ,in December 1987 and they have two children namely Kayla and Robert.
John Warren, the second son of Ed and Sadie Buckles was born June 5, 1923 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Warren graduated from Reliance High School where he was a star basketball player. He attended the University of Wyoming for a short while. He was inducted into the army in about 1943. He took his first training in Camp Roberts, California. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre of War and spent part of his army life in Australia. When he returned from the army he entered the hotel business, where he was clerk and night Manager in hotels in Casper and California. He married Louise Hickey of Chicago in Los Angeles on May 14, 1947. He started a dry wall business of his own which he carried on for many years hiring his brother and two nephews Don and Dick Jacobs. After quitting the dry-wall business he became a sales representative for Johns Manville Corp. where he was very successful. At one time he was President of the Texas Roofing Association and later became a consultant for various companies. He lived in different places in Texas and finally made his home in Houston. He now has a summer retirement home in Arkansas in addition to his home in Houston. He and Louise had no children so the Buckles name was not carried on in the Lewis and Minnie Buckles had two sons, Lewis and Henry Edward. Lewis Fayette had only one daughter and no sons. Henry Edward had two sons but neither of them had any children.
