No, I'm not a Chapman descendant, but I save records on Gorsuches. Helen Chapman (1763-1823) m. Thomas Gorsuch of Lovelace (of Thomas Gorsuch and Jane Ensor). I'm especially interested in descendants of John Ensor (1), which include his daughter, Jane (Ensor) Gorsuch. John was my parents' ancestor. The 1768 Joppa Petition was a petition to move the Balto. Co. Court House from Joppatown to Baltimore Town. It is mentioned in Baltimore Co. Families (BCF) (p. 104) under John Chapman; it is further discussed in Peden's Inhabitants of Baltimore Co. 1763-1774 (p. 27). I checked my books here and found the following Chapman information: >From Inhabitants of Balto. Co. Robert Chapman. Robert Chapman, Sr., Luke Chapman, Robert Chapman, Jr. and James Chapman -- taxables in St. Thomas Parish, 1763, Delaware Hundred (p. 7). Luke Chapman, Robert Chapman, Nathaniel Chapman -- Index to (Sheriff) Aquila Hall's (Tax) Assessment Ledger, 1762-1765 (pp. 16-18). Rigen [probably Rezin], Robert and John Chapman -- list of taxables in Delaware Hundred, Balto. Co., 1773 (p. 58). Nathan Chapman and John Chapman -- list of taxables in St. Thomas Parish in 1763 (p.1). Nathan Chapman (b. c. 1740, d. 1807) was a non-juror to the Oath of Allegiance in 1778; his daughter Rebecca m. Benjamin C. Griffith (Peden's Revolutionary Patriots of Baltimore...). However, BCF states that she m. Benjamin Gist Vaughan, which is probably correct because it is based on a marriage license. By the way, do you know the parentage of Nathan's wife, Rebecca Griffith? 7 Oct. 1672: Christopher Andrews and his wife Mary, late wife of Wm. Standley. At the suit of Robert Chapman in a plea of slander and defamation. (Archives of Md., v. LI, p. 85). Kent Co. (Abstracts of Chancery Court Records of Md. 1669-1782, p. 1). 3 July 1690: John Gaither bought of John Brown 100 acres formerly the estate of Robert Chapman, being part of a larger tract of 300 acres known as 'Freeman's Fancy,' about one and one-half miles from South River, once in the possession of John Freeman (Anne Arundel Gentry, v. 1, p. 62, by Harry Wright Newman). Nov. 1738: Robert Chapman, Sr. was appointed overseer of roads in the room of Richard Richardson. June 1792: Nathan Chapman replaced John Griffith [related to Nathan's wife?] as overseer; April 1793 he was reappointed (Peden's Baltimore County Overseers of Roads 1693-1793). 1798: Nathan Chapman (2 slaves), 216 a., part sundry tracts, old log house 16 x 14, round log barn, 1 story, 36 x 10, Soldiers Delight Hundred (The Particular Assessment Lists for Baltimore and Carroll Counties, 1798, p. 46) If you do not already have the following, you may wish to request them as I cannot find my copies: Chapman Ancestor Chart, from the Baltimore Co.
