Funeral Planned for S. R. Coats
MESQUITE, Texas-Funeral services for Sim R. Coats, 83, a retired farmer, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Tripp Baptist Church, east of Mesquite, with the Rev. L. B. Jenkins and J. C. Daily officiating. Burial will be in the Long Creek Cemetery near here.
Mr. Coats, a lifelong resident of Mesquite, died at his home Monday afternoon after a short illness.
He was a member of the Tripp Baptist Church, the Mesquite Masonic Lodge, and a former member of the Tripp School Board.
Survivors are six daughters, Mrs. Ercel Edgar, and Mrs. Gussie Paschall, both of Mesquite, and Mrs. Merle Hodges, Mrs. Layton Ragsdale and Mrs. Lozelle Mayfield , all of Dallas, and Mrs. Winnell Quinn of Richardson; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Clyde W. Paschall, Olen Paschall, William C. Hodges, Ronnie Hodges, Howard Edgar and Lloyd Crane.

S. R. Coats of Tripp Key Man In Community
When someone wants something done in the trip community, he gets in touch with Sim Roy Coats. He knows everyone and he always gets the job done. In talking to Mr. Coats Monday, he told of all the old families who formerly lived in the neighborhood. They were the Ed Paschalls, S. K. and George Paschalls, Will Paschalls, Ben Reedy, Alf Summers and T. P. and Bud Summers, and S. B. Jacobs. Those old-timers are gone now but left descendants to carry on.
Ball games were a great sport in those early days. There was a diamond on his uncle, Will Paschall’s farm, and another on Dr. Sam Coats place. Games were played on Saturday afternoons. The young people got together for box lunches and ice cream suppers.
Mr. Coats went to school at Long Creek. His mother was a native of the community and his father, J. A. Coats came to Texas from Tennessee in 1845. He was one of nine children. Mrs. Will Paschall and Mrs. Dora Blevins are his sisters.
He was president and member of the Tripp School board for 28 years. He has belonged to the Baptist Church for more than half a century. He was president of the Mesquite Cooperative Gin in 1938. Mr. Coats has taken an active part in school and community life, cooperating with Mesquite at all times. In 1903 he was married to Miss Kizzie Smith. They have six daughters, Mrs. Ercell Edgar, Mrs. Merle Hodges, Mrs. Gussie Paschal, Mrs. Leyton Ragsdale, Mrs. Lozelle Mayfield and Winelle Coats.
Sim Roy Coats died on 4. Nov. 1960 at Dallas, Dallas Country, Texas, at age 83. He was buried at Long Creek Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas Country, Texas.
