Moving west in 1840, he purchased a 260 acre farm in Otter Creek Townsip in 1841. In 1850 he went overland to California, and after spending about one year on the Pacific slope returned to Iowa by way of the Isthumus of Panama, New Orleans, St. Louis, and Davenport.
He filled the office of Otter Creek township trustee and filled other positions of honor and trust, and was an active and prominent member of the Christian church, to which he gave liberally. He married Mary Glaze on 24. Dec. 1828 at Pickaway County, Ohio. George Cochran Jr. married Hannah Ward on 21. His own obituary gives Tuscuroia County (not on the 1995 map) as his place of birth. He was the son of George Cochran Jr. and Hannah Ward. John Cochran resided at at Iowa Territory in 1839. He resided at at Otter Creek Township, Linn County, Iowa, in 1841. He married Elizabeth Hendrickson, daughter of Otha Hendrickson and Hannah Barcus, on 30. Jun. 1852; The date June 30, 1852 comes from her obituary. The numbers are not very legible. It could be 1862. John Cochran resided at at Iroquois, Kingsbury County, South Dakota, in Mar. 1882; His obituary states that he lived in 'this vicinity' of Iowa since his arrival at age four, 'excepting for about ten years when he was in South Dakota.' An unknown source claims that his wife, Nettie Jane Cochran - Darland, while in her mid twenties, moved to South Dakota with her parents (abt. 1882?). He died on 8. Apr. 1908 at Iowa at age 73. He was buried a 8. Apr. 1908 at Center Point city cemetery, Linn County, Iowa; There is an 'IOOF emblem' on his grave stone. He was a lodge member of the International Organization of Odd Fellows.

Urbana, Sept. 26. -- Mrs. Nellie Jane Darland died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Brody, in Urbana, at 8:30 a.m. Sunday after being bedfast a little over a week. Her death was attributed to heart trouble and complications. Funeral services will be held at her home in Urbana at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday with burial in Center Point cemetery.
Mrs. Darland was born July 27, 1858, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Cochran. She was married to Bailey Carter Darland at Iriquois, S.D., Jan 24, 1886. The last five years she has maintained a home in Urbana, moving here from Center Point, where she lived for 44 years. Mr. Darland died Dec. 26, 1937.
Four children, Mrs. Maude Brody and Mrs. Stella Boyles, Urbana; John Darland, Mt. Auburn, and Mrs. Millie Mollenhauer, Walker, and one sister, Mrs. Violet Abbott, Center Point, survive. Two children, Mrs. Nellie Devers and Miss Fannie Darland, six brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Friends may call at the Alcorn chapel Tuesday and at the home on Wednesday morning.
She was buried a 25. Sep. 1938 at Center Point, Polk Township, Linn County, Iowa.
