When Clifford Louis Conover (1885-1958) bought the ninety-acre farm surrounding this house from James Laird in 1915, he began operating it as a potato farm. Ten years later, Clifford bought sixteen purebred Guernsey cows and began transforming the farm into a dairy. He delivered milk to his first two customers, Dr. Tracy Dawes and Dr. George Franklin of Hightstown, In a Model-T Ford panel truck.

Within a few years, Conover's business quickly grew into one of the two large commercial dairies that supplied milk to township residents in the twentieth century. At one point, the dairy delivered 16,000 quarts of milk a day. As their herd grew to over 160 cows, they bought Additional land until the farm included five hundred acres. In 1937, Clifford was elected to the American Guernsey Cattle Cub in recognition of the size and quality of his herd of cows.

With the business growing, Clifford enlisted his wife Ann Hancock and their seven children to help him run the farm. Leo W. Fenity's history of the farm (see page 38) describes what a typical day was like for the Conover children. After rising at 5:00 a.m. to milk cows and fill milk bottles, they quickly made deliveries and ate breakfast in order to reach school by 9:00 a.m. Once school ended at 3:00 p.m., they spent another two hours milking and filling bottles before eating dinner and doing their homework.

The photograph above shows the massive porch that the Conover's added to the house. They also made three large additions to the original section of the house, which C. R. Laird built around 1860. After the dairy closed in 1972, Clifford's son Clifford H. opened a popular antiques and clock business in the house.

Surviving arehis widow, Mrs. Laura Whitaker Conover; three sons, Roland C., Ernest E. andLaVern F., all of Trumansburg; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Tucker of Trumbulls Corners and Mrs. Gladys Willis of Enfield; several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 2 p.m. in the Rhode-Covert Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence W. Mitchell of the Enfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery in the spring.' Clifton E. Conover, a prosperous farmer and stockman of Ida county, Iowa, is a worthy native son of that county. He was born on the 2d of October, 1881,
his parents being Cornelius B. and Samantha A. (Rogers) Conover, to whom extended reference is made on another page of this publication. He attended the
country schools in the acquirement of an education and following his graduation took up farming pursuits, to which he has devoted his attention continuously to the present time. Mr. Conover first purchased one hindred and thirty-six acres of land in association with his brother, Clark Henry Conover, and in the year 1920 bought an additional tract of one hundred and thirty-six acres. Golden harvests annually reward his well directed labors, for he utilizes the most scientific methods of farming and is at all times industrious and diligent. He keeps a herd of thirty pure bred Hereford cows (not registered) from which he raises every year a load of calves, which he feeds as baby beeves. He also feeds two or three loads of other cattle for the market yearly, and he is meeting with splendid success as a stockman.

In early manhood Mr. Conover was married to Miss Cora M. Nicholson, daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Park) Nicholson. A biography of her father,
Alexander Nicholson, may be found in another part of this work. To Mr. and Mrs. Conover have been born six children, namely: Alexander Burdette, whose birth occurred August 24, 1909; Cathleen Beryl, whose natal day was March 18, 1912; Cornelius Bourghs, who died in infancy; Sarah Maybell, born May 18, 1917; Jean Elizabeth, born December 19, 1922; and Thomas Wayne, who was born on the 15th of March, 1924.

Mr. Conover gives his political support to the republican party and is now serving acceptably as chairman of Logan township. In religious faith he is a
Presbyterian. He enjoys an extensive and favorable acquaintance in the community which has always been his home and in the development of which he has taken an active and helpful part. Clifton E. Conover died in Feb. 1965 at age 83.
