Cornelius B. (Red) Conover, 83, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 21, 2004.
Services will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at the Holstein United Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 23rd at the Barker Funeral Home, Holstein from 3 to 8 PM with the family present from 6 to 8. At 8:00 PM, there will be a Masonic Service at the funeral home.
Red was born October 23, 1921 in Battle Township in Ida County to Cornelius B. (Neal) and Mabel (Kurtz) Conover. He attended Lone Star School, Battle #6, and graduated from Holstein High School in 1939.
As a youth, he was very interested in livestock and livestock production, an interest that continued the rest of his life. He joined 4-H and exhibited at many county, area fairs, and exhibitions throughout the Midwest. One of his highlights was being named champion beef showman at AK-SAR-BEN Livestock Show. His love for 4-H and younger generations continued as he served for 25 years as a leader of the Battle Badgers 4-H Club and 17 years on the Ida County 4-H Committee, as well and numerous years on the Ida County Fair Board. He was one of the founders of the Western Iowa Progress Show. Red was involved with many other community organizations: Ida County Extension Council, Ida County Pork Producers, Ida County Planning and Zoning Commission, United Methodist Church Board, AF &AM Alpine Lodge#471 Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and Masonic Temple Association.
On June 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Harriett Alice Swanger of Battle Creek, IA, daughter of Orval and Alma (Messing) Swanger. They met in their youth as 4-Hers and spent 59 wonderful years together. Their shared interests included 4-H, Masonic work, and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To this union were born four sons: Cornelius B. (Neal), Cary, Dwight, and Blake.
Red retired in 1983 and he and Harriett moved to Holstein. He and Harriett had farmed for their entire lives in Battle Township, Section 13. In 1979, the family farm was recognized as a Century Farm. Red was especially proud of the land and their heritage as family farmers which had been passed down through three generations.
Red's love of fishing was infamous. He loved his time with family and friends fishing in the US and Canada. He was proud of making lures and giving them to fellow anglers. Any day of fishing was a great day to be alive.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett, and one sister Opal Harding of Colorado Springs, CO and his family: Neal and Kitty of Spencer, IA, Cary and Victoria of Holstein, IA, Dwight and Marilyn of Creston, IA, and Blake and Laurie of Waverly, IA, included are twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, C.B. (Neal) and Mabel and two brothers, Kenneth and Wayne.
The family requests memorials be sent in lieu of flowers. A fund will be established in his honor.

For more than fifty years Cornelius B. Conover has watched the progress of civilization in Iowa, bearing his share in the work of developing the resources of this great commonwealth, and a life of rightly directed endeavor has brought him the merited reward of honest labor - success and an honored name. He resides in Holstein and has long been numbered among the foremost agriculturists of this district. He was born October 28, 1853, in New Jersey, and his parents, Peter and Sarah (Burroughs) Conover, were also natives of that state, in which they resided for many years. To their union were born nine children: Elizabeth, Mary and Daniel, all of whom are deceased; Hannah, who is the widow of William Hendrickson, of New Jersey; Mrs. Harriet Bond, of New Jersey, also a widow; Sarah, whose husband was Charles Madena, of New Jersey, now deceased; Cornelius B; John, who still makes his home in his native state; and Clark, who has passed away.
Cornelius B. Conover was educated in the public schools of the Garden state and in 1873, when a young man of twenty, started for the west. In Benton
county, Iowa, he rented land which he operated for a year, and then went to Cheyenne, Wyoming, following the life of a cowboy for twelve months. On the
expiration of that period he returned to Benton county, resuming his agricultural activities, and a year later transferred the scene of his labors to Linn county, in which he spent three years. He next came to Ida county and in 1879 purchased a quarter section in Battle township, in which he established his home in the following year.
From time to time he has increased his holdings and now owns six hundred and eight acres, converting his place into one of the valuable farms of the township. He has acquired that expert knowledge of his occupation which results from years of practical experience, and his standards of farming are high.
While a resident of Linn county, Iowa, Mr. Conover married Miss Samantha A. Rogers, who passed away December 23, 1918. She was a daughter of Henry and Fanny (Bixler) Rogers, who migrated from Pennsylvania to Ohio and thence to Iowa. They made the journey in a covered wagon and were among the pioneer settlers of Linn county. Mr. and Mrs. Conover were the parents of four children: Clark Henry, who was born in Linn county October 9, 1879, and resides on the old homestead; Clifton E., whose birth occurred October 2, 1881; Claud D., who was born March 30, 1884; and Cornelius B., Jr., born December 8, 1887.
Mr. Conover is a Mason and endeavors to fulfill in his life its principles concerning mutual helpfulness and brotherly kindness. He has many friends in
the county and time has strengthened his hold upon their esteem.
