Helen D. (Cunningham) Crownover, 91, of Reading, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in the Huntingdon Manor Nursing Home, Huntingdon, Pa., where she had resided since 2004. She had been ill for a long time. She was born March 25, 1915, in Braddock, a daughter of the late William and Cora Nelson Cunningham. Since the age of 12, she played violin in several orchestras. Helen was a 1934 graduate of Butler High School, and a 1938 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, with a degree in education. She taught seventh grade at William Floyd, in Long Island, N.Y., and substituted for several years in the Reading School District. While residing with her family in Stony Brook, N.Y., she was active in community activities, including church, Boy Scouts, 4-H, PTA, and the Suffolk County Symphony Orchestra. She was also involved with the Reading Symphony Orchestra. Helen worked with the literacy council and volunteered as a home health aide. She and her late husband, Joseph C. Crownover, were the authors of "The Crownover Families of Pennsylvania" and "The Crownover Families USA," a family genealogical history that was sold in the U.S. and worldwide. She is survived by three sons, Joseph C. Crownover Jr. and William Morton Crownover, both of Mt. Union, and James Barnhart Crownover, of Duncannon; a daughter, Laura Jean Crownover, of Reading; three grandchildren, Joseph Allen Crownover, Michael Taylor Crownover and Kathryn Veronica Crownover; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Garrett Crownover, of Texas. A committal service and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to an organization that benefits one's home community. BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, Greensburg, is assisting the family with arrangements.
