Mathias Lane Dunlap was born on 14. Sep. 1814 at Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. He was the son of William J. Dunlap and Margaret Lane. Mathias Lane Dunlap married Emeline Pierce c 1838 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Mathias Lane Dunlap was Newspaper writer and Farmer bt 1853 - 1875 at Champaign County, Illinois. He died on 14. Feb. 1875 at Champaign County, Illinois, at age 60. The following is from " History of Champaign Co., IL with illustrations- 1878"

MATTHIAS L. DUNLAP - The subject of this sketch was born in Cherry Valley, New York, September 14th, 1814. His youth was spent on a farm and was uneventful. His father's family moved about on the frontier, and finally located near Pulaski, Oswego county, where they remained for several years. The summers were spent in working on a farm, and a few weeks in winter were devoted to attending school. At an early age he developed a strong liking for the sciences, and finally decided to study medicine. This determination was never carried out, for the family moving west, in 1835, he followed them and settled at a place now called Troy Grove, in LaSalle county, about ten miles from Ottawa. He remained only one winter at this place, which was devoted to teaching a school. The next spring he secured a clerkship in a store in Chicago, then a village of a couple of thousand inhabitants, where he formed the acquaintance of many young men who have since become leading citizens and millionaires. From Chicago he went as book-keeper for a firm of contractors, on the Illinois and Michigan canal, at Lemont, where he remained two years. Before this time he married Emeline PIERCE, at Chicago. Having amassed a fortune of a few hundred dollars, he determined to devote himself to agriculture and entered a piece of government land in what is now Leyden, Cook county, about twelve miles west of the city limits. For many years he followed farming and surveying. About 1845 he first turned his attention to horticulture, and, in the course of a few years, built up one of the largest nurseries in the west. He held the office of township supervisor for a number of years, and was elected a member of the legislature from Cook county in 1854, when it had but four members. He presided over the caucus of Free-soilers, which, by a small majority, nominated Lyman Trumbull to the United States senate, and delegated Lincoln to private life, until four years later, when the nation called him to the highest office in its gift. In politics, Mr. Dunlap had been a democrat, casting his last Presidential vote for Frank Pierce. He was always a "free-soiler," and during the Kansas war warmly espoused the side of freedom in the territories. His house was one of the depots on the underground railroad, and no refugee from slavery ever knocked at his door in vain. In 1855, becoming impressed with the idea of extending his business and securing more land, he purchased the half-section three miles south of Champaign, now known as "Rural Home." Two years later, he removed his entire family to the place and resided there until his death, February 14, 1875. After his removal to this county he became deeply interested in its prosperity, and furthered its settlement by every means in his power. He was a man of indefatigable energy, and when defeated at one place he lost no time in repining, but at once projected something new. During the struggle for the location of the Industrial University he aided materially by his widespread acquaintance among the public men of the state, in securing its location in the county. Mr. Dunlap was a contributor to the press of the west, almost from the first day of his arrival. When the Democratic Press, a republican newspaper, and the leading free-soil newspaper of the west was established in 1853, he was engaged as its chief agricultural writer, and his weekly letters, "The Farm and Garden," attained a wide popularity. His nom de plume of "Rural" was well known all over the west. He continued as agricultural correspondent of the Press after its consolidation with the Chicago Tribune until the day of his death, a period of 22 years. It is unnecessary in this brief notice to speak of the success of Mr. Dunlap as a farmer and fruit-grower. His monument stands in the orchards planted under his direction and which testify to his faith in the prairies as a fruit region. His family, consisting of a wife, seven sons, and two daughters, still survive him. They are carrying out, as far as possible, the plan laid down by him for making "Rural Home" one of the attractive spots of earth. Its hospitable doors are always open, and the public is welcome to share in such knowledge of agriculture and horticulture as may be developed there.

Menzo Dunlap was born on 19. Dec. 1816 at Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. He was the son of William J. Dunlap and Margaret Lane. Menzo Dunlap married Isabella Pierce, daughter of Smith Dyer Pierce and Polly Dunlap, on 24. Dec. 1841 at Du Page County, Illinois; License # 105, Vol A. dtd 24 Dec 1842. Menzo Dunlap resided at at Champaign County, Illinois, in 1880. He died bt 1880 - 1887 at Champaign County, Illinois. He was Farmer; He also ran a hotel and flour mill in his earlier years. The following is from " Portrait & Biographical Album of Champaign Co., IL"

MENZO DUNLAP, proprietor of the well-known Evergreen Home Farm in Champaign Township, is one of the early pioneers of this and Cook County, and is pleasantly located on Section 36, Champaign Township, of which he took possession in 1855. At the time of its purchase by our subject the farm was wild land, which he has now brought to a fine state of cultivation, enclosed it with good fences, and erected upon it a substantial and convenient set of frame buildings. Mr. Dunlap is a native of Otsego County, N. Y., and was born Dec. 19, 1816. His father, William J. Dunlap, was a native of Montgomery County, N. Y., and the son of John Dunlap, whose father, a native of Ireland and of Scotch ancestry, emigrated to America when a young man. John Dunlap was reared to farming pursuits and spent the greater part of his life in Cherry Valley, N.Y., of which State he was one of the earliest pioneers and served in the War of 1812. During that struggle his family, in common with many others in that section of country, suffered greatly from the depredations of Indians and for a long period lived in fear of their lives. Amid these thrilling scenes William J. Dunlap, the father of our subject, was reared to principles of honesty and the courage required by the men of those times to successfully cope with the difficulties that surrounded them. Young Dunlap followed farming during the earlier years of his life, some of the time kept hotel and also operated a flouring-mill. In 1836 he emigrated to the Prairie State, and was one of the earliest pioneers of La Salle County. After a brief residence there he removed to Cook county, of which he remained a resident until 1857. Thence he came to Champaign county, soon afterward retiring from the active labors of life, his decease occurring in Champaign Township. The mother of our subject, who before her marriage was Miss Margaret Lane, was a native of Cherry Valley, N. Y. Of her marriage with William J. Dunlap there were born ten children, all of whom lived to become men and women. Of these, Menzo was the fifth child. He was fifteen years old when his parents became residents of Lewis County, N.Y., where they lived two years, and thence removed to Jefferson County, spending two years there also. In 1836 the parents with their eight children, started with four horses and two wagons for Illinois, making the entire journey overland, and being seven weeks on the road. The father purchased a farm in La Salle County, where they lived a brief time, then took up their abode on a tract of wild land in Cook County. Their location was fifteen miles from Chicago, then a humble hamlet. Here our subject in due time purchased forty acres of Government land, upon which he built a frame house, and placed the whole under a good state of cultivation. He occupied this until 1856, then selling out came to this county and purchased the tract of land which he now owns and which he has converted into a valuable farm. It was at that time a wild, uncultivated prairie, no part of which had been turned by the plowshare. Mr. Dunlap, after years of industry, has placed it under a good state of cultivation and erected all needful farm buildings. Upon a part of his original purchase now stands the flourishing town of Savoy. The marriage of our subject with Miss Isabella Pierce took place in Du Page County, this State, the day before Christmas, 1841. Mrs. D. was a native of Oswego County, N.Y., and was born april 3, 1825. Her parents were Smith D. and Polly (Dunlap) Pierce, both natives of the Empire State. The father, now eighty years of age, makes his home in Belmont, Iowa. Of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Dunlap, nine in number, seven are now living: Isabelle became the wife of Jackson Burt, and is a resident of Urbana, Ill; Maggie married Willoughby Condit, and lives in Scott County, Kan; Burleigh is practicing law in De Smet, Dak; J. Hammil married Miss Ella Coon, and lives at Savoy; Mary, Mrs. J. C. Jordan, is a resident of Champaign Township; R. Livingston married Miss Lettie Jutkins and they live on the home farm; Lillian, the wife of J. C. Cline, lives in Monticello, Minn. The mother of these children departed this life at her home in Champaign Township on the 13th of May, 1880. Mr. Dunlap, who was formerly Democratic in politics, has since the organization of the Republican party, identified himself with it, and uniformly casts his vote in support of its principles. He has been a stirring business man and a skillful farmer, keeping full pace with the march of progress in the great and rapidly developed West. In 1886 he added a new feature to his farming operations, in the shape of a steam engine and other necessary apparatus for the manufacture of apple jelly and pure cider vinegar. This he carries on in partnership with his son, R. Livingston.

Oscar Dunlap was born on 9. May. 1843 at Leyden Twp., Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Mathias Lane Dunlap and Emeline Pierce. Oscar Dunlap began military service bt 1862 - 1865 at Illinois; The following information is from "History of Champaign Co., IL with Illustrations - 1878

Oscar enlisted in the 26th Illinois Volunteers, for three years. Having assisted to raise company I, of that regiment, he was appointed orderly sergeant. In the spring of 1862, the 26th was united with Pope's forces, and sent to capture New Madrid. Captain Dunlap took part in the battles of Farmington, May 9, and Corinth, May 28th, 1862. Taken sick, however, he returned home on a furlough, and while at the north, was appointed a recruiting officer, with head quarters at Champaign. Soon after returning to his regiment, he was promoted to the position of a second lieutenant, in the spring of 1863. He continued with his regiment in its meanderings through the south, and was promoted to the first lieutenancy in March, 1864, and on September 16th, of the same year, was commissioned a Captain, at that time being at home on a furlough. Returning to the front, he was unable to gain his regiment, and reported to the headquarters of Gen. Sherman, for temporary duty. He was assigned U. S. military conductor, and while in discharge of his duty as such, met with the accident that deprived him of a hand and a foot, which happened by his being thrown from a moving train, by a wrecked car. After remaining for a short time in the hospital, he was sent home, and on the 15th of May, 1865, was discharged on "account of disability, and his services being no longer needed."

The following is the history of the 26th Illinois volunteers during the time when Oscar was a soldier:

The Twenty-sixth Regiment was enlisted during the summer of 1861, from the counties of Effingham, Stevenson, Lasalle, McLean, Sangamon, Champaign, and one company at large, so that it represented every portion of Illinois. In August 1861, seven companies that were at that time organized, were hurried off to the defence of Quincy, which was then threatened with an attack from Price, Green and their followers. They had no arms, no clothes, no blankets, and went forth to meet the foe. The remaining three companies recruited under the most discouraging auspices, and only by the most strenuous personal exertions, did not join the command until January 1862, up to which time a dreary fall and winter was spent guarding the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, fighting bushwhackers, and kindred occupations.

This regiment was organized at Camp Butler near Springfield and was mustered into the United States service on August 3, 1861, with seven companies. Three more companies were organized later and by January 1, 1862, the organization was completed, the regiment having in the meantime performed guard duty at Quincy, Illinois, and Hannibal, Missouri. February 19. 1862, it left Hannibal, Missouri, arriving at New Madrid on March 3rd and participated in the action there. Thence it marched to Point Pleasant where it arrived on the 6th day and where it engaged Confederate gunboats with its sharpshooters. After the evacuation of Island No. 10 by the Confederates it returned to New Madrid, from which point it participated in an expedition against Fort Pillow. Thence it proceeded up the Ohio and Tennessee rivers to Hamburg Landing and marched to Corinth, Mississippi, participating in the siege at this place. On May 8th and 9th it was engaged at Farmington, Mississippi, and on May 28th was in an encounter with the Confederates near Corinth. Company G of this command is said to have been the first Union force to enter Corinth after its evacuation. The regiment served in the vicinity of Corinth till August, 1862, when it marched to Tuscumbia. Thence in September to clear Creek. On the 18th of September to Iuka, Mississippi. Was engaged at this place on the 19th and joined in pursuit of the Confederate force, arriving again at Corinth on October 3d and participated in the battle of Corinth.
After this action, it followed the retreating foe to Riply, then returned to Corinth on November 2d. It became part of General Grant's army in the northern Mississippi campaign, going as far south as Oxford, where it remained until December 20th and was ordered to Holly Springs to prevent the capture of that place by Van Dorn, which place it reached only after its capture by the Confederates and after they had fled. Thence the regiment moved to La Grange, Tennessee, where it remained until March 8, 1863. On this day it moved to Collierville, Tennessee, and was engaged in fortifying the place and defending the railroad leading to Memphis. On June 7th it broke camp here for Memphis and Vicksburg, it disembarked at Haines' Bluff about June 11th and went into camp at Oak Ridge, forming part of the line of defense across the Yazoo and Big Black Peninsula, opposing General Joseph E. Johnston's relieving army.
Upon the fall of Vicksburg on July 4th, in the afternoon, this regiment formed part of the column to disperse this relieving army. The regiment participated in the second battle of Jackson and about July 22d began its return march to the Big Black River. Here it remained until September 28th and returned to Memphis on the 7th of October.
After a few days' preparation, the regiment started for its long march from Memphis to Chattanooga on October 11th. Reached Bridgeport, Alabama, on November 15th and participated in the battle of Mission Ridge on the 24th and 25th of November. Before daylight on the 26th, it followed the retreating Confederate column to Ringgold, Georgia, and then took up its march of two hundred miles to the relief of General Burnside at Knoxville. It returned with full ranks on March 3d and remained at Scottsboro until it started on the Atlanta campaign May 1st. The regiment was engaged in the campaign and capture of Atlanta and then became part of General Sherman's army, in its march to the sea.
It participated in the siege of Savannah and capture of Fort McAllister and then proceeded to Beaufort, South Carolina, and served there and at Port Royal Ferry until the beginning of the Carolina's campaign. It was in the action of Columbia and battle of Bentonville. Thence proceeded to Goldsboro, North Carolina, and on April 10th started on the march to Raleigh. Left Raleigh May 1st for Washington. Was in the grand review at Washington. Thence proceeded to Louisville, Kentucky, where it remained until July 20, 1865, and was mustered out of service.
Started for Springfield, Illinois, and received its final pay and discharge on July 28, 1865. " He married Mary Jane Van Buren on 9. Feb. 1870 at Champaign County, Illinois. Oscar Dunlap resided at at Tolono, Champaign County, Illinois, in 1880. He was Fruit Grower in 1880 at Tolono, Champaign County, Illinois. The following information is from "History of Champaign Co., IL with Illustrations - 1878

Captain OSCAR DUNLAP - To willingly offer oneself to the service of the country, with a strong probability of never living to enjoy the peace for which he had fought, is a sacrifice that should not be lightly passed over. Captain Dunlap, when a mere boy, offered his service to his government, and though he has sacrificed two of his limbs in the discharge of his duty, he does not regret having assisted to protect the old flag.
He was born in Leyden, Cook county, Illinois, May 9th, 1843, and is a son of the late M. L. DUNLAP, of this county. The family originally came from Cherry Valley, New York, and after remaining for some time in Cook county, came, in 1856, to this county, and located at the "Rural Home," where the father, M. L. Dunlap, died, in 1875. Captain Dunlap spent his early life at the "Rural Home," and received his schooling in the district school, and when a call for troops sounded across the continent,
Captain Dunlap was married February 9th, 1870, to Mary J. VAN BUREN, a very excellent young lady of Albany, New York. Although badly crippled, the Captain persists in trying to do something toward his own support, and has laid out and adorned a lovely little fruit-farm in the north-west corner of Tolono township, which shows the excellent taste of the proprietor. May he long enjoy the peace he so well merits.
