Ulysses Goodenough was born bt 1865 - 1880. He was the son of
John Wesley Goodenough and
Mary Duvell. Ulysses Goodenough died at Mount Laurel, Burlington County, New Jersey. Oscar Stone: "We used to visit Uncle "Liss" in Mt. Laurel when we wereyoung. I remember he had the best watermelon in the world. We wouldbreak it over the pigsty, take all the best meat out and throw the restto the pigs. One time, we fed the old sow so much she wouldn't get upafter we left, and Uncle Liss had to go in and prod her out of the sty toget some exercise.
"One day Uncle Liss was cleaning out the mule stall and got behind her.She kicked him so hard he went right out oðVìŒ7þ
f the barn into the pigsty. Hewas so mad he went and got a shotgun and killed her right then and there, and then laid down crying that he had killed his precious mule!
"The outhouse -- a "double holer" -- was backed up to the chicken coop.UncðVìŒ7þ
le Liss used to take the lower back off it to get the wheelbarrow inso he could clean it out. One time he noticed a nice white, round bottomsticking below and started ticking it with some chicken feathers. Hismother-in-law went screaming out ðVìŒ7þ
of the outhouse, and his wife wouldn'tspeak to him for a week!
"Uncle Liss is the guy who died of throat cancer. He was working onthe big chicken ranches in Jersey and always had a pipe sticking out ofhis mouth, so I can only assume he got cðVìŒ7þ
ancer from the pipe, but we werenever sure because he also used to drink water out of the chicken troughin the broiler houses! I remember seeing him with his whole lower jawrotted away. It was awful.
"A couple of times when we were in BurliðVìŒ7þ
ngton County we attended theQuaker meetings. I found out later that most of the people there wererelated to us somehow or other."
